QUOTE (downsized @ Oct 31 2009, 06:08 AM) I guess my pont is, and this is sad, that american auto makers do not produce vehicles profitably. Thus, the situation they're in now. Mahindra on the other hand is expanding now to include the US market. Sure, these early generation ones will be crap many ways, they are fuggly, and thye're probably sketchy @ 80 mph etc. But their company is viable and growing, just like Hyundai and Kia, not like Saturn and Hummer. I wouldn't be surprised if you see their dealerships pop up where GM ones used to be. Sounds like we got a GM hater, and a Mahindrana fan. So, when are you trading yours in for one?

A market that has no safety or emissions standards to speak of. If I remember correctly GM was very profitable in the US when we had no government regulations.......... I would be suprised if this truck is more than 5% cheaper than a silverado if the truck actually makes it to market here. By the time the company re-designs the truck from the ground up to make it legal for sale in the US market the price will go up considerably. Hell, even VW had a hard time making a diesel for the US market and I'm guessing they have a few more years and more expertise in diesel production than mahindra.

QUOTE (mkelly @ Nov 3 2009, 06:45 PM) After doing a little more research........
2wd regular cab will start at around 22k.
4wd 4 door will be up to 28k.......
For 28k you get a 4 cyl with 140 hp 236lb-ft of torque and a supposed towing capacity of 2700lbs.
I paid around 26k for a 5.3 liter 4wd lt2 extended cab. More room, more power, better quality, better warranty...... I suppose the little truck might get better mileage............ Of course there is no mention of crash results yet.........
I will go on record right now and say that IF, and its a big IF, mahindra actually tries to sell these things in the states it will be a bigger flop than the yugo...... although true, there are people who pay that much for tacomas and colorados.

True, but for those prices you get a nicely equipped colorado or taco. 2wd regular cab 4cyl taco is 15,345 2wd regular cab 4cyl colorado is 16705 2wd regular cab 4cyl mahindra is 22k................ 6k premium for an unproven truck that has poor safety ratings. I just dont see this truck getting off the ground at all. According to early reviews the build quality is 2 or 3 generations behind the colorado (which isnt great) and it costs much more. The only advantage that the mahindra has is the diesel engine...... and remember that this is an engine that has yet to pass epa emissions standards......

QUOTE (unit731 @ Nov 4 2009, 06:06 PM) No one has mentioned the "Chicken Tax".
25% or some such number.
That's why all/most trucks are manufactured in North America.
Their Business Plan is flawed. There was some talk about sending knock down kits to US for assembly. But I haven't heard much on that.
As it stands the price will be too high to be competitive.
Just think they are testing the waters here for now. Time will tell.
And then there is the Tiger Truck.
"July 21, 2008 —The Tiger Champ gets 37 mpg with a three-cylinder diesel engine from Caterpillar Inc. It is assembled in Oklahoma and available at 70 dealerships nationwide. In June, Gov. Brad Henry signed a bill that makes the Champ and a small Tiger Truck pickup, the Star, legal starting Nov. 11 on all roads in Oklahoma except most federal highways." The problem is the tiger truck is illegal to drive on all interstates and 90% of the countries highways. They are useless.......
