You should contact the ACLU, you have been offended and deserve restitution. In MA you may walk away owning a dealership.

I am not understanding the situation.

I have never paid any tax to any dealer out of state. Its when I register the vehicle, in my state, the DMV collects taxes. dunno.gif

The out of state dealer can collect and pay the tax to your state in most cases.. I ve done it that way several times. We need more info on how the deal was written up.

If I was you I would just file a complaint with MA. consumers affairs (state agency) and see how many times they did this. It a good way they can mislead you in your total price to close a sale.

Dealers all over don't get out of state taxes correct all the time. He doesn't owe the tax to the dealer. He owes it to the state. And at the end of the day, he will have to pay it. Bottom line.

Dealers don't know what taxes are in all states. They usually call the state in question and ask them. They don't always get the correct answer.

well this dealer in MA where i bought the car charged me 1066.00 for registration fees.. but because of some MA laws he could not let me drive the vehicle off the lot and he had to go and register it.. He has runners that do this for him.. We completed the deal on friday but on monday he stated that he had no runners till tuesday.. So on tuesday he took the car to Albany NY and registered it and I met him there and gave him my trade in vehicle and took possession of the Malibu.. I get the car at noon on tuesday.. at about three PM i get a call from the dealer stating that the tax was incorrectly assessed and he needed to collect 450.00 from me.. I have the recipet from the reg that says it cost 1526.66
The car cost 22000.00
He gave me for my trade 9075.00
the balance due after all the fees and such are 14378.88

so i cant figure out what cost so much.. but i am waiting this one out.. I will see how it plays out..

Some states calculate Tax on the sale amount (22,000) and some calculate tax on the amount paid after trade (14378). Maybe they calculated the tax based on the 14,000 and not the 22,000???

Why not call the registering authority in your county and speak with them, better yet go in person. They can look up your registration info. See if they can help you sort it out.

7% of 22000 is 1540 so it looks like you paid tax on the full amount.. NY is one of the tougher states when buying used out of state. they may not give you credit for the trade. If thats the case then maybe the dealer didn t know..
