I found a loose cable under the dash when I removed the HVAC duct to replace my heater core. The cable is about 20" long with a brass push in fitting about 3/4" long at each end. One end was securely pushed into a white plastic insert in the ash tray frame, but the other end seemed to be loose somewhere near (or at?) the firewall under the dash. The cable is black with the number "2526" on it. What is this cable for?
On a side note, I ran both of my fuel tanks very empty to add a fuel system cleaner (per label instructions) shortly after removing this cable.
Now the fuel gauge always reads 1/4 full on both thanks. Is this just a coincidence?
This is a 1983 Chevy C20 with factory A/C.
I can't seem to attach a photo (file size too big?)
Thanks

Is it a thicker black cable, I am thinking radio antena. IIRC the cig lighter also has a push-on end, but the guage of wire is the normal 18ga stuff. I would venture to say that it is unrelated to your fuel guage, but I haven't been under the dash of an early 80's for a while now... See if you can take a lower quality pic and try to upload that.

Shine a flashlight at the loose end, does the other end light up the ash tray? It May be the optic light that goes from the back of the instrument cluster to the ash tray......The fuel guage may be just a coincidence, make sure that you securely attached all dash ground wires after you did the heater core
