Full Version: Screen Temporarily Locks Up

This is by far my preferred truck related forum. However, it has one VERY aggravating glitch (for me?) that I would like to eliminate if possible.

On every session that I sign on here, at least one time when I go to a sub-forum (doesn't matter which), the screen locks up for about 30+ seconds. I can move my mouse, but the screen won't move...I can't change to another page...I can't do anything. Again, this never occurs on the forum's home page, it is only when I go to one of the sub-forums. The one thing I notice is at the lower right corner of the screen it looks like a number of "things" are loading. Once that activity stops, everything is back to normal and I can navigate the page. After that I can go all over the forum without issue. If I leave GM-Trucks.com and go to another site, I can return to GM-Trucks and this happens all over again.

I am running Internet Explorer Version 8 if that helps diagnose the problem. Also, I visit a lot of other websites and this site is the only one that does this.

HELP????

I have zero problems using Firefox. Might want to try it.

I agree, try Firefox. I work at a local phone office and we do computer support and people will call in sometimes and say their internet doesn't work. I go out after troubleshooting on the phone some if possible. I have seen many computer lately where IE doesn't work, but firefox does. Then i reset IE and it works just fine. I have seen more IE issues lately then i have in the past.

Also are you using Windows XP? Vista? 7? How much memory?

I have the same problem (I use IE8). If Firefox is the answer, then why is it only this site causing this problem? All of the other sites I frequent do not have this problem. This leads me to believe it's a GM-Trucks issue, not a browser issue.

Exactly...I have no other issues with IE8 on any other sites. Plus my wife and daughter use the same computer and have no issues. I was just hoping that there might be a simple settings issue here that I might be able to correct. I can't see changing to a new browser just for one glitch. Guess I'll just have to live with it!

Windows Vista w/ 2 GB (DDR2 SDRAM)

BTW...THANKS for the responses!! thumb.gif

I agree that it is a site specific issue... just saying that Firefox doesn't show the same symptoms.

I do appreciate your input! And I haven't completely dismissed the idea of changing to Firefox. Again, I was just hoping it would be an easy fix. The more I watch what is going on while the screen is locked up, the more I believe it is a glitch caused by the loading of the sponsor links. It is probably unlikely that I am going to get that fixed! shakehead.gif

The site has been tested on all browsers, but it does sound like something with the ads is locking up IE for you.

I'm going to look into this, since this is not what we want to have happen.

It's probably just Internet Exploiter that's screwing up, business as usual.

+1 Way to go Josh!

OP. You might wanna make sure you have all of the IE updates installed too. MS has issued a lot of updates since December 09. Just a suggestion.

Is there any way to turn off the ads on the site ?

This is the only site I go to that is super slow. It seems to be the ads loading on the side. Can't do anything until they are loaded, and then the screen jumps once the finish loading.

Here is my take on this situation after observing it for a while and researching on the internet......

Basically, what you said about the ads loading is correct. The "code" used with this forum's software for loading advertisements is causing the glitch with some user's computer systems. For whatever reason, not everyone experiences this problem. It appears to be worse with personal machines that run certain combinations of internet access software (IE, Foxfire,...) and different versions of system software (Windows Vista,...). It is much more complicated than I have explained it, but this is most likely the basic idea. (Those in the-know...please correct me if I am wrong!)

Bottom Line....This forum and most websites survive primarily due to sponsor support and this random advertising. They aren't going to "turn it off", and I don't blame them. I enjoy this website too much! I plan to just deal with it! Hopefully, one day this issue will get resolved!

The site does rely on advertising to survive, however, we realize that our 'customers' are you guys and that you're the most important thing!

We use google ad manager, and we are going to be transitioning back to hosting our own ads. It seems like google is getting slower and slower!!! uhoh.gif

On our test machines, we do not experience what you are experiencing, but it sounds like it is extremely annoying. I will give you some updates as we progress towards the new ad system in the next month.

It is very annoying, as this is the only site out of literally hundreds I have been to that does it.

I asked becasue I know on some sites, if you pay a fee then the ads go away, and I wasn't sure if that was the case here or not.

I know the site survives from the ads, which is why some allow you to pay to replace those fees.
