I got the notice I was close and notice a bunch of you guys already exceeded yours, WTF? Are they just trying to add revenue or has this been a problem before or are we being such post whores there has become an issue?

D@mn! Monthly bandwidth is 25gig and you exceed that?? eek.gif
DV2000NJ
Yeah this is bullshit, something's up. I haven't uploaded anything since last Tuesday, and I was fine until yesterday. Either all of a sudden someone started hot-linking the shit out of my pictures, or they're trying to f*ck me (or us) over, because I haven't touched my photobucket account in a week.

And I'm not upgrading to Pro, I just upgraded my Flickr to Pro, I'll use that.

Oh, and they sent me the email on the 20th, saying I had less than 5gb left to use. I haven't uploaded ANYTHING since then! What the hell?!? Oh well, I just have to wait until 9th of next month to get my shit back. And I KNOW for a fact I havent' uploaded 25gigs worth of stuff this month. I barely upload anything on there.
DV2000NJ
Yeah what the hell, I've uploaded 7 pictures!

File sizes:

75.75kb
63.01kb
9.78kb
163.42kb
280.42kb
268.28kb
270.2kb

If that somehow adds up to over 25 gigs, I have a donkey licking my balls right now.

That bandwidth error has nothing to do with what you've put ON there. It's their system complaining that too much is being downloaded from there.

One thing that has always irritated me about Photobucket is that they don't provide usage / hit reports (at least as far as I've seen). It'd be nice to see # of hits and where they're coming from...

That's ridiculous... And for so many people to suddenly be getting the error at once, something's fishy.

I think they just told all the people that work there to find someone's account, and just spend all day opening their pictures. nonod.gif lol.gif

Weren't quite a few of those people hosted on your account? Their sig pics, I mean..?

I know my sig pic alone - just on here - has been hit over 12k times this month. If I were on more boards, it'd be a lot more than that. Multiply that sig pic by a few people on a few boards, you could start chewing through some bandwidth... especially if you have some big ol' post hoes who are posting a LOT on different boards... biggrin.gif

EDIT : OH, yeah... I almost forgot... that last sentence of your's... Yeah, I'm sure they'd rather go open all of YOUR pictures a bunch of times, rather than hot chicks ... or even giraffes! lol.gif

I'm reading your posts and am trying to figure what you're talking about. Is there a short or easy explanation to ''bandwidth'' and 25g. is all about? I know our sig pics are linked to an online photo hosting site and that's about it.BTW when I bring the pointer over top of the ''Upgrade to Pro'' window in the lower left hand corner of the screen there it shows a web address to MySpace....
take it easy on me guys, you know I'm an old f*ck and some things take time to sink in lol.gif

Mine is exceeded. And i am not paying to upgrade to pro. Bunch of BS if you ask me. I tried imageshack too, but photobucket is better IMO!

Storage space is how much you can store on their site.

Bandwidth is basically how much 'traffic' is generated going to specific files on the site. So, if you have a 100kb file and it is accessed 1000 times, you have generated 100,000kb of transfers (bandwidth) from that site for that file.

Does that make sense?

Yeah something just doesn't seem right that so many people's accounts are suddenly exceeded all at one time. I know it happened to a couple guys on GMFS also.

OK,so who would be accessing my files other than me? I have maybe 60 -80 files in my account and add when I want to post a pic here, evidently there are some with thousands?

edit: I just checked my account, this is what it says...evidently I have more pics than I thought I did:

Yes. Each time your sig pic appears somewhere, the filesize for the sig pic is added to your used bandwidth for the month.

Well, the bandwidth doesn't really tell how much "you" are on this site or any other site. The bandwidth usage (at least as far as Photobucket is concerned) can give you an idea as to how much your stuff has been looked at.

That "monthly hits" # tells you how many times one or more of the graphics on your Photobucket has been accessed by someone/anyone... It could be someone on the site, it could be a webcrawler doing indexing for one of the search engines, or pretty much anything else...

Let me see if I can explain bandwidth another way... Let's say it's a 2 mile round trip to your favorite place to go buy some CR. Let's say you go 5 times a month, that's 10 miles of "bandwidth" (road miles, in our case) to go get some CR.

How was that example? smile.gif

I see you have now made your profile private. That's probably a good idea. It won't help for the links that have already been created. But, at least it may help to cut down on future linking.. smile.gif

That was a good example... the CR helped lol.gif ,so why is bandwidth such a concern? Is it a way the hoster checks how much you use their site? and therefore ''free pic hosting'' only goes so far,and if someone uses it too much then there comes a time to pay up to use more?

Bandwidth costs money... The more bandwidth a particular person is using-up, the more CPU cycles they're using, the more traffic they're causing on that company's internet connection, the more (and/or faster) internet connections you may need to deal with it, etc, etc...

Let's look at it like a road now.. If you have one car, running up & down an old dirt road, it's no big deal... You give him free use of it, because it's no big deal. If he doesn't mind using the rough old road, you don't mind letting him use it...

Now, if someone decides to build a neighborhood down there and put 100 homes in, that road will need to be upgraded... That takes money and maybe you figure out a way to not charge them for it directly... Let's say a 2 lane asphalt road is put in... Everyone's happy.

Now, let's say some truckers realize that brand new asphalt road saves them 10 miles on their journey and now a bunch of THEM start using the road... Well, that little two lane asphalt road may be fine with cars & pickups, going back & forth. But, it probably isn't going to hold up so well with 100 18-wheels running up & down it all day and night...

So, now maybe you need a 4-lane concrete road with a turn lane in the middle..? There again, more & better infrastructure requires more money and more investment...

Bandwidth is kind of the same way. "A lot" of people on Photobucket are probably like the guy in the car on the dirt road. They don't use too much, so give access to 'em for free.. Maybe they'll click a link or two and maybe buy something that you're advertising on your site. Let's say they're like you... 1680 hits w/ 64MB of bandwidth used.

A bunch of other people are probably like the cars & trucks, running up & down the asphalt road... Let's say they're more like Jeff.. What was his usage? Nearly 9GB of bandwidth used? He's not near the max on usage, but well more than "just an occasional car, up & down the road." They still give it to him for free, because more exposure is kind of like free press for a company.. Maybe they can figure out a way to make money off of it..

And then you have the guys like DAN.... A "real" trucker, hoggin' up bandwidth with his albums with 100+ pictures in them, and all that jazz... Forget trying to figure out a way to make money off of the traffic he brings to the site. Figure out a way to make money off of HIM! smile.gif

The sad thing is (for the end user), by the time you get to that high of bandwidth usage, you are kind of forced to pay-up. If you don't all that stuff you've spent time & effort posting won't be seen by anyone... at least not for the whole month. The company kind of has 'em by the short-hairs.. uhoh.gif

EDIT : Good LORD, I get long-winded sometimes... Sorry about that! cheers.gif

Well you Sig Says "Click on my sig picture. Do it." Looks like they did!!

Clicking on it takes you to my band's Myspace page, nothing to do with photobucket. It's the same as just putting a link in a regular line of text.

My monthly hits was over 164,000. rollin.gif

How many different places did you post those car show pics? I noticed that had over 100 pics in it earlier..

I see you have now made your profile private. That's probably a good idea. It won't help for the links that have already been created. But, at least it may help to cut down on future linking.. smile.gif

I think this was the only place I posted them, at least more than a few of them. And yeah, I set it to private to cut down on any possibility of something coming up through searches.

I was just messing with you, hope your band site has a better hosting service or you will exceed your limit there as well! LOL
