John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 7-12-2018 Chevrolet announced prices today for the new 2019 4500 HD Chassis Cab medium-duty truck. Prices will start at $48,465 including the $1,495 destination charge. “These new Silverado chassis cabs are a great addition to our lineup because we can now offer small businesses and large fleets a truck that can be upfitted to do many jobs including construction, utility and landscape work, tow truck operations, first responder calls and more,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president, GM Fleet. “Chevrolet was obsessed with making these Silverado trucks easy to upfit, drive and own.” Chevy says the ultimate Chevrolet Silverado is the 6500HD, which is similar in size to the 4500HD and 5500HD but is rated to 22,900 pounds GVWR. “Bucket truck builders, fleet managers and many other customers told us they face a dilemma when their GVWR needs exceed 19,500 lbs.,” said John Schwegman, director of Commercial Product and Medium Duty at GM Fleet. “Some pay for expensive aluminum bodies to save weight so they can stay with a Class 5 chassis. Others may spend $10,000 or more to purchase a larger truck with much more GVWR than they need. The Silverado 6500HD gives them capability and protects their bottom line. It’s a great solution.” Here are the features of the new 2019 Silverado medium-duty line: -The Silverado will be available in 2WD and 4WD and will be powered by a Duramax 6.6-liter diesel engine with 350 horsepower and 700 lb.-ft. of torque and Allison transmissions with a Power Take Off (PTO) option. -The frame is designed with one-piece straight rails with no rivets or brackets on top to interfere with the mounting of custom-made bodies. There are no obstacles to work around helping to save time and money during the upfit process. -More frame lengths are offered compared with key competitors, which can help customers specify the exact truck to suit their needs. -The truck is designed to be easy to service, with a clamshell hood and a wheel cut of up to 50 degrees that can give technicians better engine access than trucks with conventional hoods. -Optional equipment includes a twin-tank fuel capacity of up to 65 gallons, a factory-installed air suspension and a full suite of available connectivity, including OnStar, Commercial Link and a built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot. Look for the new Silverado medium-duty trucks at any one of Chevy's 400 commercial dealers late this year.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 4-4-2018 Chevy wants you work truck shoppers to know that the new 2019 4500HD/5500HD/6500HD trucks now come with a flowtie. A flowtie is a Chevy bowtie emblem that allows air to pass through and thus cool the engine area. Chevy says that during Z/28 aerodynamics testing, engineers noticed that the bowtie on the grille was blocking cooling air. Engineer Richard Quinn went at the bowtie with a cut-off wheel making slots. He installed the new prototype "flowtie" on the grille and a retest proved that it allowed more air into the engine, lowering engine fluid temperatures during extended track sessions. Now your work truck can have that same benefit. Chevy work truck Design Manager Kevin O’Donnell says, “The flowtie is an elegant solution. And it’s going to work on the Silverado exactly the way it does on Camaro."

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 3-7-2018 Chevy showed off its medium-duty Class 4, 5 and 6 chassis cab trucks this week at the Indianapolis Work Truck Show. The 2019 Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD will be available with 2WD or 4WD and will be powered by a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine with 350 horsepower and 700 lb.-ft. of torque and Allison transmissions. Power Take Off (PTO) is optional. “Chevy’s designers and engineers were obsessed with making this Silverado the most customer-focused medium duty truck of any major competitor,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president, GM Fleet. “By customer-focused, I mean work-ready trucks that are easy to upfit, easy to drive, easy to service and easy to own.” For the new trucks, Chevy says it focused on addressing real-world issues owners and operators were looking for the company to address. The frame was one area of focus. Chevy addressed fuel line interference issues by putting the lines through the rails. The rivets and brackets were also eliminated from the top of the frame, making the frame rails one-piece and smooth. Corrosion was addressed by having the frames prepped and finished at the factory. Service techs had complained they needed ladders to get up to and under the hood to work on the trucks. So Chevy has redesigned the way the hood opens. Now it is a tip-forward clamshell. In response to visibility and maneuverability issues, Chevy has increased the wheel cut to reduce turning radii, and contoured the hood for better corner visibility. To help eliminate fueling issues, Chevy moved the DEF filler to the opposite side of the truck. “It’s not just numbers on a spec sheet that make us different and better,” said John Schwegman, director of Commercial Product and Medium Duty at GM Fleet. “These new Silverados are designed to solve the most common upfit and ownership challenges fleets have with many of today’s medium-duty trucks.” GM Fleet delivered nearly 300,000 units to Commercial and Government customers in 2017 – the most since 2008 – and gained meaningful market share. GM's order guides will be available in the coming few months and pricing will be announced by summer. Look for the new Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD trucks in late 2018 at commercially-focused Chevrolet dealers.
