Changing Odometer Reading

I swapped in a new cluster (pics in a week or two) and now my mileage is off. Luckily I need to raise the mileage, not lower it. The dealer won't do it. So, two questions: 1) Approximately how much will a speedometer shop charge to change the display mileage? 2) Can this be done with, say, HP Tuners?

 

The cluster reads ~125k but I need it to read ~302k (it WILL match the mileage the truck has stored if it matters).

I dunno, will a TECH II even do this? Anybody know? I have wondered about how to change the mileage on GM's. I bought a new instrument panel for my 99 with a temp gauge..... I did not want to put mine in till I knew how to change the mileage and hours on it........ Thou the gauge pack only has 22,000 miles on it.... hahaha

even if it could its highly illegal to even touch the odometer let alone it pretty much takes a dump on the value of the vehicle...

 

Note if your changing clusters(new or old)you need to correct mileage that is legal but has to be disclosed by a mileage statement........

As has been mentioned, it's not illegal if you are correcting the mileage after a cluster swap. I'd rather not mess with the DMV on this..who would raise their odometer reading almost 180k to decieve someone??

 

If it's going to be a huge deal I'll just keep my 125k, but I'd much rather have my 300k back :cool:

people sue over the stupidest crap ever, and yes if you added miles to it and sold it you could be held for fraud....i know its retarded....dmv is about the only way you can deal with it if the dealer won't touch it (which they would be stupid to without the proper authority to do so) i can respect what your doing though man, so many people now a days would take the low mileage reading and run with it...contact the dmv and see what they have to say

Just document what you done, and if you sell it mark on the title that the odometer is not right. The titles for Indiana have a line that states is the odometer right. The new ower if they know anything about that year of truck should know the problems with those years.. my two cents

That and the point that if you do it at the dealership its reported anyway to carfax, insurance company and a smattering of other places depending on state or province.

 

Its not Illegal or fraud if it has to be done. As long as like everyone said...its documented. Now if he left it alone with 125K on it that would be a big difference.

find an ebay seller for clusters that advertises that they can reset the mileage to be accurate, contact them about sending in your cluster to increase the mileage, they shouldn't have an issue with increasing it. I've had one "recalibrated" on my '03, the shop in California just wanted a very recent shop ticket showing the VIN, date and mileage. I sent cluster, when they had it I faxed in a ticket from that day (free alignment check FTW! lol) and I had it back in 2 days. My cluster was no more than ~100 miles off

The mileage in full size trucks is kept only in the cluster and no where else. The mileage in the Colorado and Canyon is kept in the BCM.

 

Speedo shops can change the miles for you as long as you have your old cluster to verify miles. The guys who sell clusters on ebay do it all the time.

 

here is a bulletin from GM on how to change mileage and where it is kept on all their vehicles. It will be in the IPC, instrument panel cluster or the BCM...

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide a reference guide to help identify which season odometer programming method to use after replacing the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). The three season odometer programming methods in use today are listed below. In addition, this reference guide lists the component where the season odometer value is stored. The season odometer value may be stored in the IPC, the Driver Information Center (DIC), or the Integrated Body Control Module (IBCM), also commonly called a Body Control Module (BCM).

 

Season Odometer Programming Methods In Use Today

IPC reprogramming and setup using the Service Programming System (SPS).

Odometer setup at the Electronic Service Center (ESC) when using an exchange IPC/DIC.

Tech2® -- The Tech2 is used to setup a replacement BCM, which includes loading the odometer value that is displayed and stored in the IPC. A replacement IPC will display the previously stored vehicle odometer value, communicated from the BCM, after cycling the ignition or driving the vehicle.

guys....contact Charlie at Florida Speedometer....he did a swap on my Suburban to Escalade Cluster last month...works perfect, just fill out the disclaimer and include it with you cluster when you send it in.

I already installed the new cluster.

 

 

Your truck now reads 125K instead of 302K.

 

The IPC stores the Mileage.

 

The BCM will "keep record" of the current mileage.

 

Swap in a new cluster? With LOWER mileage?!?!? Guess what.

 

The BCM UPDATES itself. Yeah. Got 128K? The BCM sees 128K.

 

Plug in a cluster with 52K? Fire it up. Drive around. Oh look, Hi. The BCM now reads....

I second this...except I did not have my mileage updated. Charlie updated the internal software to recognize the steering wheel controls for the DIC. He knows what he is doing...
