2008 Cruise Control Problems

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any idea on what would cause the cruise control not to work sometimes. I have been having an intermittent problem with it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. I have tried to see if it was only when the truck was remote started and that’s not it. Only one time have I had it work then I pressed the brake and it would never come back on. This is on a 2008 GMC Sierra All Terrain. 70,000 miles and the only mod is a Black Bear tune.

Thanks

Have any tail or brake lights out? If the system detects improper resistance from the bulbs it can cause trouble with the cruise.

So I check all the lights and everything is working fine. I did notice today if the cruise did not work and I tapped or sometimes hit the brake pedal from side to side it would come on. This did not happen every time but it did seam to help. Would the brake light(?) switch that is attached to the pedal cause this issue? If so would anyone have the part number?

Thanks

Justin I had the exact same problem with my 2008 silverado. I had the dealer replace the brake switch yesterday, 20 minutes and it is fine now. They said the switch costs about $20.00. It was covered under warranty.

My 2008 K1500 Suburban lost cruise control about 6 months ago. Thought it would be a dealer issue. Have not been to this site in a while but came here and found a lot of folks have this problem. Common issue is the "stop lamp switch" on the brake pedal. Part number 15861245. $23 from the dealer. Bought it and replaced it myself and that fixed it.

Took the old switch apart. Someone here said they fixed the problem by cleaning the contacts. That didn't help me. Inside the switch there is a rotating cam that activates the switch. When pressure is applied to the brake, it rotates. Mine had worn to the point it was not rotating enough to activate the contacts. New switch fixed it. Parts manager said this is a BIG problem and they keep LOTS of those switches on hand.

By the way, this DID NOT affect my tail lights or brake lights. The brake lights were working fine. Only affected the operation of my cruise control.

GMPartsDirect had it for $10. Easier for me to go 1 mile to the dealer and put it in myself.

There is a TSB on this issue. Had mine looked at 7 times.

#08-08-42-003A: Stop Lamps Intermittently Turn Off After Coming to a Complete Stop While Still Having Pressure on Brake Pedal (Replace Stop Lamp Switch) - (Aug 14, 2009)

Subject: Stop Lamps Intermittently Turn Off After Coming to a Complete Stop While Still Having Pressure on Brake Pedal (Replace Stop Lamp Switch)

Models: 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT

2007-2008 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe

2007-2008 GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali XL

This bulletin is being revised to provide a new part number. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 08-08-42-003 (Section 08 - Body & Accessories).

Condition:

Some customers may comment on the stop lamps turning off prior to the brake pedal reaching the fully released position. Some customers may also comment on the stop lamps turning off while having light pressure on the brake pedal.

Some customers with Integrated Trailer Brake Control (ITBC) may comment that the electronic trailer brakes disengage after the vehicle has come to a complete stop. This disengaging of the trailer brakes coincides with the stop lamps turning off.

Cause:

This condition may be caused by not enough pressure being applied to the stop lamp switch to keep the brake lights on.

Correction:

Technicians are to replace the stop lamp switch. The new stop lamp switch has a reduced internal spring apply force, which will allow the lamps to stay on with less applied brake force.

•Refer to SI for Stop Lamp Switch replacement procedures.

•Use the new Stop Lamp Switch, P/N 25981009.

Parts Information:

Part Number - 25981009

Description - Switch,Stop Lamp

Qty - 1

3 brake switches (old and new style)

2 taillight assemblies

2 BCM's

Finally found the issue at the BCM but was all under warranty so no worries on me.

If you have your OnStar active they will give you the active code next time it happens and you can take that to your dealer. That is how I eventually found my problem.

Is the replacement of this part a simple take-it-off, put-it-on, or is there a lot more involved? The dealer is telling my son that they need about $300 to replace this because it needs a lot of fit and tuning...

thanks for your advice

BigJay, sounds like they are trying to bend him over the table.

I haven't changed on this truck, but it's usually just mounted to a bracket off the brake petal. It is adjustable (nuts on either side of the bracket), but it's just a matter of it not being on when the brake petal isn't touched, and enough free play so that if the brake petal bounces, it doesn't touch the switch.

That being said, the fitment isn't rocket science and not the critical.

I have the problem of my brake switch sticking on. Noticed it when the cruise wont go on because it is sensing a brake signal, and then, even worse, that after stopping with my brake controller and my trailer it stays on and activates my brakes on the trailer as I drive.

I guess I'm of fto the GM dealer this week with my $20 for the part. It looks like a simple bolt on/off affair with the normal wiring harness attachment.

Do you guys remember when it was just a single pin open circuit button with a body ground and 1 wire? what happened to those days of automobiles?

Got the part from ebay for $15.00 with shipping, had it replaced in 20 minutes including figuring out the metal spring clip that holds the switch in place.

Cruise is working perfectly again and the oddest thing is that I don't reset my MPG counter at all and it has sat at 15.4 MPG for a year now, it's now at 15.5/15.6 and AFM is in V4 mode a lot more now. I'm not sure if the input from the switch was messing up the ECM calculations at all but the overall MPG is up and i'm not driving any different. Cruise control has only been broken for a month or so. Things that make you go huh...

When my cruise control went intermittent I suspected the brake light switch and the web confirmed the brake light switch as the culprit. I couldn't figure out the clip removal since it's hard to see. After figuring it out I made the removal instructions below.
