Rpo Codes? Ap8 To Ap3

Recommended Posts

Well this for my 07 grand prix, but it pertains to my silverado too. The rpo codes on my grand prix are in the trunk. I understand that ap8 is showing that it is equip with remotte start. Why is there a sticker saying "ap8 is replaced with ap3 by dealer" Anybody heard this before.

I want to buy a remote start key fob and have it programmed to my grand prix.

I know exactly what this is because I have the same thing on my truck. AP8 is the remote start prep that came on it from the factory. AP3 is what the RPO code became after the dealer installed the accessory remote start. When I added remote start to my truck via pn 17801236, it came with that very decal you see and it was affixed to the glove box RPO decal to let those in the future know it was upgraded to remote start.

Go buy a key fob and have it programmed.

AP-8 is the remote start prep. pkg.................

IF your non factory equipped late model GM has the AP-8 code you can then buy the

GM remote start kit/special code/remote from the dealer who then activates the remote

start in your vehicle with the Tech 2 and special code.

AP-3:

2-Way Advanced Remote Start - For Use on Vehicles With Remote Keyless Entry and

Engine Start (AP3),

Yes.................No?

I switched the AP3 and AP8 codes in my reply above. (now fixed) AP8 is the prep. code. AP3 is what AP8 becomes with the upgrade kit, as referenced by the included glove box decal stating that the dealer has installed remote start and ap8 has been replaced by ap3. AP3 does not mean advanced remote start, just normal remote start.

so if I have AP8 on my sticker, just buy new fobs? or do I have to buy a kit with more in it?

You essentially just get new fobs, but the accessory kit that GM sell comes with both fobs and the special code that becomes associated with your truck allowing this feature to be turned on permanently and not turned off if the body control module is reflashed. p/n 17801236 from GMpartsdirect.com currently is 128.31 and you will pay less than an hundred buck for the dealer to program it. Call the dealer with that p/n and see if they can beat/match the price.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I need to beat this horse a little more...

I have a 2011 Sierra; with RPO code AP8.

I bought part number 17801236. Authentic GM, with verification code.

I've asked my local dealer to install it, and Dealer sais I've been "reading on the internet too much"... and that "I can't just program the fobs and have remote start". "it's not that simple"

They're telling me I need the kit, "with all the wires and stuff" which they quoted at the exact same price that I paid for 17801236. But this 'Kit' takes 3 shop hours to install, so total would be around 600$, how would you like to pay.

I'm going to the big city tomorrow, to a dealer who has a clue. Can anyone confirm that I am not missing something?

I think your dealer needs to start understanding what the RPO pkgs are. As long as you have the prep pkg ou dont need wires and such installed. Go (run not walk) to a new dealer

I don't think they're bring to screw me, I just think they're dumb.

Last time, I Invited the parts manager and owner of the dealer out to the parking lot to watch me install the DIC with my bare hands, because they laughed when I told them I could. I even gave them the old piece of trim. Unfortunately that tactic won't work with GM techline, scantool etc...

I don't want to give them my business, but I live in the woods, they're 1.5 hours away. The next closest dealer is 3 + hours. It looks like it'll be spring before I get my remote start working.

Since you bought the kit, you have the directions that literally tell the dealer what to do. Take a copy of that to the service manager and show him so that he can walk his way through the process.

Hate to bring this up. I just want to be sure before I tell my dealer to order something I can't return if it does not work. I have read several threads on the AP8 RPO code that my truck has. All I have to do is get my dealer to order pn 17801236 as referenced above and then they contact GM with the code to reprogram my truck? It seems I remember that GM had suspended the reprogramming process for some reason or another or was that a different issue? Do the current key less entry fobs become dead or do you then have 4 working fobs? I plan on getting the kit as soon as I can make it back to the dealer.

The part number referenced comes with 2 remote start key fobs, the sticker for your glovebox that replaces AP8 with AP3, and a set of instructions for the tech to follow (including the authorization code). They follow the directions, input the authorization code when required, and you're good to go. I just had this done after Christmas this year, and they charged me an hour of labor for the reprogramming. The old key fobs will work fine (they just don't have the remote start button on them).
