Hello ladies and gents,

I replaced the exhaust manifold on my '04 Canyon a few months back and I've been meaning to post up some brief notes on the walk-through. Without further ado, here is the maintenance job outline for replacing the exhaust manifold on a '04 GMC Canyon equipped with the 2.8L LK5 engine:

1) Remove or disconnect the following:

  • Negative battery cable
  • Catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold
  • Exhaust seal
  • Air intake assembly
  • Transmission fill tube bracket nut, if equipped with automatic transmission
  • Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) from exhaust manifold
  • Exhaust manifold heat shield
  • Exhaust manifold bolts
  • Exhaust manifold and gasket

-Installation-

1) Clean the exhaust manifold retainer threads and the gasket mating surfaces.

2) Coat the bolt threads with a suitable threadlock.

3) Install the exhaust manifold and tighten the bolts in sequence to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), tighten the bolts again to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), then tighten the bolts again to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

4) Install or connect the following:

  • Heat shield and tighten the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
  • HO2S and tighten to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm)
  • Transmission fill tube bracket nut, if equipped with automatic transmission.
  • Air intake assembly
  • New exhaust seal to the exhaust manifold flange
  • Catalytic converter to the manifold. Tighten the nuts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  • Negative battery cable
