AFM oil comsumption possible solution

Recommended Posts

the silverado in my signature pic has the common AFM oil consumption problem. it is a 2007 1500 5.3 that currently has right under 150,000 miles. i bought the truck after a lease when it had 117,xxx miles. i knew the previous owner, and the truck was very well maintained, almost all miles on the truck were on the interstate. the truck has had consistent oil consumption since day one. no, i did not keep track of exactly how much i added per miles driven. it always used three quarts, when it was time for the fourth quart, it would be about 25% oil life remaining, and i would just change the oil. i run mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 and wix filters.

i had always heard good things about lucas products, so i finally decided to try it. the last time i changed my oil, i did everything the same, but replaced one quart of oil with a quart of lucas "full synthetic" oil additive. completely beyond anything i would have predicted, i am currently at about 65% oil life remaining, and still have not lost a drop on the dipstick.

i will update this thread as i pile on more and more miles, but at this point, i am beyond impressed. i thought i would share my experience, as i know how many others are frustrated with dumping quart after quart into their AFM engine.

i thought i would post an update, almost a year later. i am still impressed with the difference it has made in my truck. in my experience, it does not completely stop my consumption, however, it reduces consumption by more then half (as a conservative number). my truck is also up to 163,000 miles at this point.

Thanks for the update. I have had good results with Lucas products on some of my other vehicles in the past. Esp the power stirring stop leak on a 15 yr. old car.

just did an oil change after a total of 6k miles, truck had used not quite another 1/2 quart so in total it used just under a quart over 6k miles using the Lucas Synthetic stabilizer (truck was using a qt every 3k miles before I started using the Lucas). I mixed a half qt of the Lucas with a 1/2 qt Mobil 1 and then added the other 5 qts when I refilled. I'll post updates to monitor how the truck is doing for oil consumption as the miles rack up....

I can believe that the LOS slowed oil consumption. After all, adding a 250w base oil to much of anything will slow consumption. And that is all the LOS is, just a heavy base oil. No additives, not magic formula, nothing. Folks over at the BITOG oil site have sent in samples of LOS to the labs and had it analyzed. All that the testing shows is that it is just a heavy 250w base oil. Basically, all anyone does by adding the stuff is thicken their oil. Kinda like the old STP oil treatment gig. Problem is, since a quart of motor oil is up to 25% made up of additives and detergents, by putting something like LOS in place of a quart of oil, you are thinning out the additives that protect the motor. But to each his own. I would think running a heavier motor oil would do the same thing and still have all the benefits of the additives, detergents, etc that are in motor oil.
