EGR is strictly for emissions. It sucks in a portion of the exhaust as it leaves and sends it back into the combustion chamber to be burnt again to help lower emissions. How exactly would it lower your mpg?

I wouldn't bother to disable the EGR unless I was building an all out performance engine. The EGR purpose is to lower the burn temperature and reduce NOx emissions. Obviously it will not increase performance but as long as it is working OK the effect is minimal.

Todays engines are designed to run on very tight parameters, including operating temp. The EGR is heavily factored in and the engine relys on this for cumbustion cooling, It,s no longer simply an emissions issue, I wouldnt disable EGR unless you want to run the risk of burnt valves and /or holes torched thru your pistons.
