High Mileage AFM 5.3

Recommended Posts

How many high mileage AFM 5.3s are out there, I like my truck alot and I would like to try and make it to 200k if possible Im currently at 91,500. The engine is smooth, I plan on doing plugs, wires, serp belt, I did tranny, transfer case and coolant at 75k. I have all the fluid for the front and rear diffs but they make me a touch nervous with not seating correctly, would you use the blue silicone gasket in a tube or get a stock gasket at the dealer for that?

I've only got 65k on mine so I can't speak to the mileage question.

The rear diff cover has a reusable gasket that doesn't require any RTV or anything. The front diff doesn't have a cover just a drain plug and fill plug so no worries there either.

08 1500 4x4 CC 5.3 about to roll over 300K by Labor Day. All majors original (tranny, transfer, engine). Runs better now at 293K than it did when I got it at 93K.

Turned off AFM, replaced original valve cover with improved PCV design - stopped all excessive oil loss, had computer tuned at speed shop, oil change every 5K - castrol, change transmission fluid at 50K intervals, change all fluids at 100K interval, change plugs and wires when needed or 100K, driving lots of interstate and rough oilfield roads. Will continue to drive as long it will stay dependable and paid for.

Old-school mechanic that did PCM tune said "these trucks will run fine once you get the Govt out of the engine".

trucks that get driven A LOT last longer then ones that sit

Sure as hell is true! Anytime we have a truck that sits at work, it always seem to break down when we need it the most

especially that crappy International DT466 motor, what a nightmare...

I used a regular gasket on mine as well as the tube stuff but in a black tube and was "specially formulated" for differential oil. But hey, it hasnt leaked yet so Im happy!

I have a 2011 5.3, I use it for work (Meter Reader), I do have the AFM dissabled, I currently have 114k on the truck but the motor has really high hours on it, I am at 4450 hours on the motor now, I change the oil at 5k intervals and is not using a drop to this day and is still running really strong.I hope to use this truck for 2 more years at which point it will have close to 250k on it and well over 8 thousand hours, should be intresting to see how it is running then or if it even makes it that far.As it is right now the engine has more hours on it than an average daily driver would at 300k. It seems to be a very durable engine.

What's disappointing is that I'm assuming when AFM first appeared, it was simply an option not a standard feature. It appears that every gasoline engine GM makes now(4.3 V6, 5.3 and 6.2 V8) all have AFM. It would be nice if it were possible NOT to get it. If I were to buy a new truck, I wouldn't want it. I guess if I were to ever buy a new truck(highly unlikely as they cost too much for me) then that simple fact meant that GM wouldn't get my sale, probably just get an F150 with EB or a Tundra. Dodge Ram has a similar cylinder cutoff system for the hemi which would probably make me not want to buy one of those either.

With my 2013 (as with most all vehicles I buy), all the fluids, except coolant and brake lines, got changed within the first 3000 miles and got the factory fill stuff out of there. The AFM got disabled at 240 miles on the odometer as well. Then a PCV oil catch can got put on at the 1190 mile mark. By the time roughly 16,000 miles had turned over since that install, the catch can captured enough junk coming thru the PCV to fill, to the top, a 16 oz drinking water bottle. Sometimes one has to makeup where the OEM left off.

About 95k miles here and engine, transmission etc still run great. As with one member above I had the original PVC valve cover gasket changed and no oil issues now. Aside from that it's been a few sensors and a broken leaf in the rear leaf spring.

Currently deciding whether or not I wanna keep her these days..
