HID Headlight Bulbs / HID Projector Retrofit

Recommended Posts

I put a set of 5000k 35w HIDs from Morimoto in my fog lights and am noticing the chrome that lines the fog housing is starting to melt. Will this get worse? Why would they make something that would melt this housing? The lense also feels hot as hell when touching it.

Yes, it'll get worse if you use the fogs a long time. They make whatever will sell to make money. It's really a marginal setup. An outfit in San Diego called HID Guy is making a 25watt kit that they claim won't melt the plastic fog lights. Just so you know, HIDs in the fogs make them into a pretty high powered light that blinds the oncoming traffic.

I was going to mount some Morimoto LED fog lights (1200 Lumens) soon, but I'm waiting to see the Rigid DOT legal (1700 lumen) fog lights in a month or so.

TRS finally made a Sierra specific HID Upgrade kit. I looks very high quality and I will probably be buying it. Just wanted to share with everyone!

If you are going to replace the projector lens and have your headlight open then it may be a good idea to just change the whole projector like some people are doing. I'm changing to a FXRthis Christmas.

I too am disgusted with the headlights on my 2015 Sierra SLT. It's looks relatively easy to install FX-R's into the factory housing and I'm ready to pull the trigger on a Stage III kit from Retrofitsource.com. They're not there today on account of the Thanksgiving holiday, but I want to order the kit now since they're having some sweet black Friday deals. That's where I need help:

1) What size FX-R do I need? 2.5" or 3"?

2) What harness should I get. They have numerous options.

After reading this thread a bunch of times I can't figure out these items.

Thanks for your prompt help!!!!

I'll post pics of the install with before and after headlight porn...

Agreed, was gonna order FXR projectors with it also, is it 3 inch lens?

Yes. 3" lens will fit from what I am told. Phil at Fastheadlights said that's what he has been putting in

Thanks dude! I ordered the stage III kit with the 3" FX-R projectors, no halo, no shrouds. It all came to $240 and change, with shipping, using the black Friday coupon code.

I wasn't sure about the harness, so I went with the 9006 harness with a note in the order to substitute something else in case I guessed wrong. I figured since the stock 9012's supposedly have the same connector has 9006's, I'll be good to go. Hopefully they see the note and do the right thing...

Had my wife in the truck tonight (raining out) and she asked if my headlights were even on! Sheepishly I said yes and told her I dumped $240 on the HID kit. She understood immediately! But, she's spoiled. Her Acura RDX has awesome lights.

The stock headlights are positively dangerous! I'm waiting for some lawyer to ding GM - the headlights are a disgrace!

As I stated in my OP, I will take lots of photos, before and after pics, etc...

Those RDX lights are among the best on the road.

You might consider the Osram CBI bulbs as an upgrade with your FX-R projectors.

Hey all, looking to take advantage of the Black Friday sales for TRS. What's the best/brightest bulb to pair with the FXR 3.0? I was thinking of a 55W HID. This would be the brightest option with the new projector correct?

Edit: 50W. Also making sure on this. I will need the LHD correct?

I just did the projector upgrade with XB35 bulbs as they are a little brighter in the 50 watt kit. I have not had anyone flash me and the light line rarely bounces up to anyone else's eye height and mostly when it does is the higher right side.

I also want to take advantage of this sale, but everyone is having issues with the GMC and can't find anyone to confirm issue or no issue with the Chevy fog lights. I might just risk it and order some spare light bulbs for later. I'm thinking about putting LED in the original high beams since I don't need the lights anymore, but want the color to match.

I just loaded my cart to $325 ($300 for ballasts and $25 for bulbs) and got -$6.25.

Really?
