93 chevy k3500 dually 7.4 454 drivetrain issues

Recommended Posts

hello, first time to chevy, and this forum. I just bought a used k3500 dually with the 454, not sure what the tranny is, I am assuming it is stock (there are no service records). I am haveing a few issues with it. it has 180xxx miles in it.

#1. when I am backing up in a stright line, after about 5 feet, the truck seems to bind up then I hear and feel a clunck from the rear end, after that it is perfect. just curious if anyone has any idea on this one?

#2. when the engine is cold, and I have let it run for a few mins to warm it up. when I go to take off and driving down the street it will rev up to 4000 rpm, then shift, no matter what I do, once it shifts, it will not shift higher than 2nd. now when that happens I will pull over and turn it off in park, then turn it on, and start driving, and it shifts great, other than that no funny noises, or smells. tranny fluid is good. I really hope it is not a tranny prob, I can do everything but a tranny lol!

I realize it is a old truck and I am going to have to put some work into.it, but hopefully not as much as I payed!

thanks for your time!

If you plan on keeping this truck for a long time, might as well get that tranny rebuilt by a good shop. Or buy a aftermarket one in-case you plan to throw some performance parts on that anchor!
