Tried to get my spare tire down the other day just to check it out and was unable to get secondary latch system to work. Is there a special trick that I am missing. Followed all the instructions in manual but still nothing. Short of cutting the cable above the tire how else are you to get it down. It comes down about 6 inches then stop, cable keeps coming if I unwind it. I put it back up and let it click twice and try again, nothing. Put the jack under it like the manual says but still nothing. Is cutting it the only way? Good thing I'm not sitting on the side of the highway trying to get this out.

One of the primary reasons I keep my spare in the bed with a tire cover on it for UV protection. I live on gravel roads and in the upper midwest. Between the dirt, mud, salt, etc the last thing I need is a problem getting a spare out from under the pickup on a two lane road with very little shoulder. Never have been convinced that the spare tire location used by many OEM's is all that good of an idea. Even for those that don't operate in the same stuff I do.

Secondary latch mechanism is difficult to describe, but here's a helpful link:

Which is why I drop mine at least once a year to check hoist operation.

Nothing more frustrating than getting a flat (usually at night, on the side of a highway, in the snow), knowing you have a good spare, jack, lug wrench, yet cannot drop spare...

I had the same issue as OP, following the manual to no avail. The dealer cut and replaced with a hoist that has no secondary latch. The technician stated that the failure is common and due to corrosion.

Bob, thanks for posting that video.

Thanks guys for the response. The video helped me allot, once I get a few minutes I will give it a try, if it works great if not I will just cut off and replce with a system that doesn't have the secondary latch. I see how this latch is good in a way but sure would not want to be stuck on the side of the highway , at night, in the winter trying to get this down.

thanks again

jim

Before my truck left the lot I had this done. Have only been stuck on the side of the road a couple trucks ago with my '05 with a flat and it was one time too many due to this briliant engineering design.

The thing I've noticed is, that all the latches that get hung up are also the one that put their spare tire up front side first. With the "rear" of the tire facing downward it would allow the cable to be cranked up further than if the wheel was the other way around. I've always had the "front" of the tire facing down. Would that make a lick of difference??

I think you have it backwards, but I understand your point.

Face of wheel should be facing down.

I would think that reversing the tire WOULD defeat the latch mechanism (in that it would not winch up into receiver).

However, IF your cable ever let go, it could result in a very bad feaure.

Of lesser concern, you cannot access valve when mounted.

My 1990 had no latch... First time I needed the spare, I cranked it down, worked fine, even though the wheel was FULL of mud.

On my 2006, my latch caught, but I was able to lay down and push up the spare just enough to release the tire. I know I could have removed the secondary latch, but it rides fine chained in the bed.

I just removed my spare knowing how many issues people have with trying to use the lowering mechanism. AAA works great if I have an problem and I don't wanna go too far with the AWD. Figure weight savings??? lol

To note: I didn't have any issues with lowering my tire despite the undercarriage being in rough shape. Maybe 2002+ has that stupid secondary mechanism that screws things up.

My 02 does not have the secondary latch same findings as you demonte1997 lowered just fine
