Locks stuck? Tailgate and spare tire locks.

2011cs154x4

Question

So, my key works in ignition, door, glove box, and center seat storage. It does not work in the tailgate or the spare tire lock. I insert the key and it just seems like it is not the correct key because there is no movement. I just bought it used (2011 1500 4X4 Crew Cab) and never thought to check those. I have tried WD40, but still no luck. Any ideas?

I have not found any damage that Kent thought might have been the problem or cause, now, Zebrative - do you mean the bumper and the middle section of it rather than the tailgate that you mention of, I do see that the tube does go to the lowering device for lowering the spare tire down, so, with removing the center section, of the bumper, will be able to remove the lock then that is in that tube?

I was referring to how to get the tailgate lock off so maybe you could free it up.

The spare tire lock is in the black bumper cover, it just blocks access to the tube. That lock is not in the tube, but to the rear of the tube. If you remove the tube you might be able to force the lock out from that side. That lock only has one part that engages the bottom of the access hole it is locked into.

I am having the same problem, I bought it used from a huge used vehicle retailer, and called him, they said it is probably co-roded but how do you remove it to lubricate it so it does work, are there any diagrams or pictures of it so I can fix it myself .. it will not turn either way, it sure looks like the key does not go in all the way.... mystified by it .......

Zebrative, I did check it out today again, even checking under the back end, and I did re insert the key, but it does not enter all the way in, so tomorrow I will attempt to see if there is something stuck in the key slot, and try and remove it, it does seem the lock is ok, that is not seized, but with the key not entering all the way, it sure looks like a key piece is stuck in there .. the only way to lower the tire is with access to the lowering gears... and that is blocked by that lock... although there are 2 clips that attach to the bracket that holds the lock and tube, behind the plastic part of the bumper to keep things in place, maybe that is the trick to remove it then the tube might release and I can work at that lock ... I really appreciate all the info I am getting here .... it makes me feel that I am not going at this blindly ...

For the tailgate; remove the lower of the three bolts on the back center of the tailgate, the tailgate trim with lock will pull off. There are three clips that hold it (in addition to the one bolt from the back )one at each top corner and one center, bottom. The lock will come off with the tailgate trim.
