High frequency noise coming from dash when in 4WD

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Have 2014 Sierra SLT AT 4x4 with 1600km's and this past week had the seasons first couple inches of snow and tried out the 4 wheel drive for the first time and right away noticed a slight but noticeable pinging high frequency noise coming from the dash when in "4 wheel high" or "4 wheel auto" but immediately goes away when back in "2 wheel high".

When I first heard it I thought is was my keys jingling and grabbed a hold of them and ruled that out.. (only one other key) Mind you it's nothing cranking up the radio can't take care of but otherwise it's annoying as heck.. Anyone else experienced this? It sounds much like jingling keys but high frequency. Only happens in 4WDHigh or 4WDAUTO, never in 2WD..

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this at all? Will mention it to the dealer next time I'm in..

- Al

In another post, I was asked if I heard an unusual noise. Post is located here http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/155379-unusuall-winter-storm-for-oklahoma-and-my-2014-silverado/page-2

I woke up yesterday morning, and we had a Colorado winter mix on the ground.

I had put my Silvy in auto 4wheel when I left the house to go pick
up my daughter (who lives about 25 miles north of me). The vehicle
performed flawlessly. I was very impress how it handled a very slick
situation.

Many vehicles were stuck or had slid into the ditch, I assisted 4 vehicles by pulling them out the ditch.

Just thought I would share

Question, do you hear a weird electronic squeaking when you put it in auto 4wheel?

Yea its a real high frequency noise that seems to almost come from the dash.. I've tried it several times now and it does it every time.. Gonna mention it next time I'm at the dealer.

I appreciate all your replys..

I think you may just be hearing the transfer case being engaged and the engagement of the front differential. In normal 2wd driving the transfer case is not engaged, but the front drive shaft spins but the front diff is not engaged. So the spinning is not under load.

When in 4 auto or 4hi/4lo the transfer case is engaged and there is load being placed on the transfer case and front diff.

My 2002 was always "louder" when in 4wd. Same with my 2011 F150. More parts spinning = more sound.

Northward Bound,

I'm sorry that you're hearing this noise when in 4-wheel drive. Were you thinking of taking it into the dealer to have it checked out? I would be happy to help you set something up if that's the route you planned on taking. PM me your name, contact info, VIN, current mileage, and preferred dealership if this is something you would like my assistance with.

That's not it. Sounds like a hard drive loading. It's not mechanical.

A little over a week ago I bought a new Silverado 1500 LTZ. We had our first snow yesterday here near Philly, and I turned the knob to automatic, then to 4 high and got the same high-frequency, high-pitched almost ticking sound. Haven't taken it to a dealer yet since I've only put a couple hundred miles on the truck. Has anyone else taken it to the shop and had theirs looked at? Thanks in advance!

- Cheers!

Noticed it today in the snow. Almost seemed t make noise every time I accelerated. Nothing music can't tune out, but would be nice if it did not do it at all! Someone who is going to the dealer should mention i. Not sure if it was coming from the actual switch or under the dash.

I got the same problem. PM'd the GM service guys on this site on Saturday. Still havn't heard anything back. My dealer informed we there was no bulletins as of yet.

Interesting, I'm still wondering if someone took it to the dealer for this problem yet. I've been too damn busy painting the house and working.
