Needs help pickin on new rifle & handgun.

Recommended Posts

I'm gonna get two new guns here soon & trying to think which ones I want.
I'm gonna get a deer hunting rifle & also a new handgun, I want a 1911, which ones would you guys prefer, Colt or Remington or what? Kimber is just too much.

&

As a rifle, I'm thinking about a .270,R-700 or 30-06. Brand wise Idk what to pick from besides Remington. Price range really doesn't concern my on the rifle part. Just want a real good reliable gun.
Pretty much gonna need it for deer & bear hunting.

This is my deer gun, I have it in .30-06. The accutrigger is great. IMO you can't beat the price and reliability of a Savage. They aren't expensive, and I think that drives the "tailgate hunters" away from them. With a synthetic stock it does kick harder than many .30-06 because it's so light. Not an issue for me and I'm not a big guy.

I'm looking to get a Walther PPQ M2 soon. IIRC they come in a 5" barrel, which I like. Most pistols are overpriced for what you get though. Not like a rifle that you actually can get what you pay for.

If you want a 1911 for the sake of having a 1911, ignore this post, but if you're just wanting a full size .45, give a look at the springfield Xdm .45. I have one and love it. 13+1 .45 for reasonable money, very accurate and reliable.

On the 1911 side, I don't have one yet, but I've shot a few and one that's impressed me as a good value and a nice gun is the smith and wesson.

For 1911s Colt is hard to beat, they're the original. Springfield Armory is good too. Kimber makes pretty guns but I've read way too may posts about reliability and poor customer service.

For a .45 APC gun get a SIG P220. They shoot great right out of the case. If you what a 1911, Colt is hard to beat, but the S&W version is nice. SIG also makes a 1911 style .45, never shot one, but if anything like my SIG it will be very nice.

I've got a P226 and agree, you can't go wrong with Sig Classics. I've shot a couple Sig 1911s and they're great as well, but they can get pricey.

:M16: I speak with "experience" as far as 1911's that is what I have carried and used every day for over 30 years! Kimber is the number one selling 1911 made! And it ain't because of price! You can hear something bad from somebody about anything made. Most are ignorant and have never owned whatever it is they are talking about! Colt has gotten better over the last ten years, they had to or they were in Jeopardy of losing the whole 1911 market. The USMC announced this past summer that they were going back to Colt 1911's after thirty years of the failed 9mm. experience with Beretta. I have a new Colt, which I very much like. I also have a S&W which I also like. I however prefer the Kimber Super Carry Pro which is what you will find on my side! I have the four inch which I prefer to carry all day as opposed to my five inch guns. I also have the Crimson Trace Master Series grips which I really like! As far as bolt-action hunting rifles, you can not beat a Remington 700! If you want to bear hunt as you mentioned, A 30.06 should be the min. This rifle has been the choice of US snipers for the last thirty years! That should tell you something!

Go for the .270 from browning. Browning A-bolts are excellent guns. I know they have a newer version called the x-bolt out but I haven't shot one so I cant comment on them.

My uncle has a .270 not for sure from where, but he likes it real well. Gonna look into the Browning,

Thanks man, I guess I'll get the Colt. I'm gonna look into the Springfield & Sig.

My dad has some Sig guns, he loves em.

Thanks man! I think I'd probably just get the Colt 1911 or the Springfield 1911.

I have one gun from Springfield, I like it.

Where do you think I should get the R-700 from? Wal-Mart carries it, but I read somewhere that they're different made & less of quality? Just hard to pick from. BTW, where you live at in SWVA?

Sig 1911s are nice but most use a different slide profile so they won't fit 1911 holsters if you plan on carrying this or doing competitions. I had one and liked it. In terms of other .45s, the P220 is tops IMO. The DA/SA trigger can be tough to master but they also offer it in a single action only trigger which is what I own.

:M16: I would prefer the Colt over the Springfield. The Colt 04860XSE is a very nice piece. With a 4.25" barrel and a aluminum frame, this gun has all the features in a 27 ounce comfortable carry package! Very similar to my Kimber except for the round heel, which I like in a carry gun. As for buying the Remington or any firearm, I would recomend buying from a good dealer. I don't buy anything at Wal-Mart! I live in Wytheville, "Gods" country! :flag:
