Any other suggestions for getting headlights a bit brighter or more useful would be appreciated.

You can install 9011 bulbs which are about 25% brighter. The bulb bases are plastic and some modifying is required to allow them to fit. Page 14 of this thread shows the simple mod of the bulb.
