Humming/Whining noise between 40 and 50 MPH?

Having same issue. Dealer replaced ring and pinion. Still whining. Originally heard between 46 and 70. Since rear ring and pinion change, noise comes in at around 55 and is gone at 66. However, most noticible at 60! Waiting on next move from Gm! Truck has 6.2 with 3:73. Great truck otherwise but will not be happy until this issue is gone! Embarrassing to say the least even to the point my passengers are asking what is causing the noise?

First GM rep that tells me this is normal will get an earful from me! Owned too many to fall for that line!

I will repost when and if they take care of this and even if they don't.

My 14 Sierra crew 5.3 3.42 ratio was in the shop for a whine in the differential on acceleration between 57-60 mph. I had brought it back to the closest dealer explained the problem to the service mgr and he said his truck does the same thing. Imagine that! The service mgr. hasn't had his fixed lol. He said the backlash was good on mine and there was a service bulletin to put an additive. I didn't think that would work and it didn't. I ended up bringing it back to the dealer I purchased it from (2 hrs. away). The tech said the backlash was 0.013 way out of spec and that the cover had never been off! So much for the first dealer lying to me. The tech tried to shim it and bring the backlash within factory spec of 0.002-0.005 but couldn't get it any closer than 0.008 trying different shim kits. The tech also said the teeth weren't tracking right and even though the whine was better than before, he wasn't satisfied so he ended up changing the ring and pinion and bearings. Preload was set and backlash is now 0.004 using the original shims. Now the truck has no whine and is quiet as it should be. I don't know if the preload and backlash wasn't set up correctly from the factory causing damage to the ring and pinion (GM may be lacking in this area) or if the ring and pinion was defective. Whichever, I'm satisfied now. I've read from other sites and talked to other techs and learned that even with all new parts, if everything isn't set up correctly, the bearing preload, backlash isn't set, and pinion nut isn't properly torqued, it would all be for nothing and will still have problems. I was fortunate the tech who did mine has been there for 20 years and specializes in differentials. I'm sure not all dealers are fortunate to have a guy specializing in differentials.

Hey RayR,

We understand this whining noise can be very irritating. Glad to hear you've made the dealership aware and that they've been working with you. If you'd like for us to contact them at any point, just send us a private message. We're always happy to assist any way we can. Please keep us posted on how things go.

I spoke with a GM cust. care specialist on Fri. I forewarwarded MAF2's e-mail for reference. My truck was doing the exact same thing. My repairs were the same as his except the engineers didn't go any further then tightening the backlash to 0.008. The e-mail states that this didn't correct the problem and new parts had to be installed. This is the first response I've received detailing the fix. The Cust. Care specialist is going to have the dealer rep call me and hopefully get this matter resolved. They have been able to cut the humming noise in half but it's still there and getting worse. What they've done to me is like fixing half a toothache.

Mine has been in the shop for over a week now for the same issue. I talked with the dealer today and all the parts finally came in. They said I should have truck back tomorrow afternoon. I'll keep everyone posted as to what they changed in the rear end and if the noise is gone.

Mafd2.......I have the in/out constant hum/whine noise between 55-70. 14' sierra slt crew. 5.3 3.42. I thought it was driver's side in the front dif somewhere, but could be rear. I've been fighting this for a year. I've tried to get the dealer to replace differential, but they wont.

I've given up . My veh is a 2014 5.3 3.42 rears. Multiple trips to the dealer. Multiple trips by supposed Detroit Engineers to see and drive the vehicle, multiple calls to GM customer support all have been to no avail. The last trip was to another GM dealer who put some young kid in the truck for a test drive and he said it was Tire Noise. Mafd2 had the fix and described it and I showed it to the dealer who just ignored or didn't even read it. Told by the last set of engineers that the noise is f"within GM Tolerances" All their advertising about the new Silverado being the quietest one yet is BULL. Thi is my third and loudest Silverado. What hurts is both loaner vehicles were 2014 and 2015 Silverados with the same engines and rear-ends with no noise whatsoever.

That's bad... I guess it depends on the tech. The tech that did mine specializes in differentials and has been there for 26 years. Try a different dealer?? When you said the loaner trucks didn't do that what did the service mgr. say?

Same issue. Didn't think "humming" was the same as "whining" :happysad: so I started a new thread. It's been 3 weeks since my last contact with the dealer. They were going to "do more research". :bs: In the mean time, I get to listen to it whine every time it rolls past that 55-60mph range.

You only confirmed what I have said in several posts in this thread.

Here is a good and simple visual presentation on the gear backlash and gear tooth contact issue and how to adjust both:

Warmie@245, Have you tried to switch it to Auto at these speeds to see if noise goes away. Mine instantly quiets when I switch out of 2wd. But when I switch back it gradually comes back kind of faster at first then settles at previous intervals as before I switched knobs to Auto. Very annoying and odd.
