Oil Catch Can Observation

Recommended Posts

I put the Mike Norris can on last week. I drove to my parents house for a few days (about 600 miles there and back). My oil catch can is doing it job catching a noticeable about of oil. I have a BB tune and i run 89 octane gas all the time. It may be me, but my truck is running a lot smoother. I have read that the oil sucked into the engine can reduce the octane level in the engine. Perhaps im getting some of that back, but those interested in doing the oil catch can mod, i would recommend it not only to keep the oil out of the engine and help extend the life of the engine, but also as a performance mod, taking full advantage of the better gas, and the tune.

You are correct! Oil contamination from the PCV going into the combustion chamber will reduce octane of the fuel in the cylinder. The ECM will detect a low octane condition and revert to sub octane parameters. That will reduce fuel economy and power. The catch can is a wise move by anyone. I am using another quality catch can, and in the last 8200 miles, it has collected a little over 10 oz of junk.. condensation, oil, etc. Might have actually been more if the pickup was not parked in a heated garage. The amount of condensation in the winter coming thru that PCV is obscene. I noticed a considerably larger amount in the catch can when we took the pickup on a trip to some relatives and parked it outside in the cold overnight. I have a 16 oz water bottle I have been dumping the stuff in to, in an effort to see how long it takes to fill it up. almost 3/4 the way full in 8200 miles. That should give anyone pause about what it going into the intake.

Thats nuts. Like i said, iv only had mine on for a week and when i checked when i got to my parents house, oil was already dripping out of it. My question is.... now that most of the stuff is being caught before going into the intake, what will happen with the stuff already in there? will it eventually burn up over time?

yeah, what is already in there has caused whatever mischief it is going to cause. I am sure that the valve stems and intake manifold don't look ideal, but if you have no problems now, at least by stopping more of it from happening by using a catch can, it will make all the difference of a potential problem happening in the future. Seafoam spray shot in thru the intake tube at the throttle body could make a difference in cleaning some of it up, but the only way to get it all out of there is taking the intake manifold off and cleaning it. I wouldn't worry about it at this stage. The Seafoam spray method that might be worth doing.... inserting the hooked spray tube in the boot area where the throttle body is and doing a major clean thru the throttle body into the intake. Just got to find a way to keep RPM's at 1000 - 1500 for it to distribute properly throughout the intake.

Figured with winter upon us, I would show what my catch can setup has captured in 1000 miles. That milky condensation junk sits on the bottom with oil on top of it. Makes one feel sick that it could be in the intake, coating the valves, and making a mess internally. Oh, the setup is a Conceptual Polymer standard unit for the primary (left) and a Conceptual Polymer High efficiency unit for the secondary filter (right). The capture bottles are 2" wide by 4.5" tall

Yeah the jars almost take something like MAF or Throttle body cleaner to get the crud out of there when I dump it. I have a hard time imagining that for years on other engines, I didn't even think this kind of thing was going on internally. Am sooo glad I made this mod within 1200 miles of owning this ride.
