OTA DVR

Recommended Posts

I moved out of cable range and dont want to spring for DirecTV. I bought an amplified indoor HD antenna. I will have 12 mbps internet in 2 days. I am curious if anyone knows of any DVR other than Tivo that can use an antenna. Hoping to not need a monthly service charge.

Used a SiliconDust HD HomeRun (dual tuner) with Windoze Media Center stuff for years. Since I moved I don't currently have it setup, but will again soon.

Worked well, plus all the PC's and UPNP stuff on the home network could access the recorded shows.

Way out where we used to live it picked up 7-11 stations, analog only had 2-3 viewable. Plus with the two tuners you could watch one while the other was recording or someone else was watching something different.

I get my NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, and a couple others. I found this last night. Kind of curious about it

Does it pull up a guide or do you just have to set a channel and time

  • 1 month later...

I have two TiVos and use OTA and Internet TV. They work great, the new Roamio is pretty responsive., remember only the base model can do OTA. Just buy one on sale and spring for the lifetime, and a warranty. Best Buy offers a pretty cheap 3 or 4 year wwarranty if you buy it there. All together, If it dies the day the warranty is up you'll have paid like 14 a month for its services.

They are known for usually transferring the lifetime license once in the event of a failure and a third party warranty,(may have to provide warranty claim from the third party), and their customer service is very friendly. They aren't like the cable boxes, if the device sucks, they lose a customer and they know it.

Then if you decide to go back to cable or satellite you just rent a cable card for a few bucks and you'll save for the box rental fees by using your tivo
