DEF Delete

Recommended Posts

I've never owned a diesel, but I'm considering getting one soon. I've heard many complaints about the DEF tank and how one should delete it. What exactly are they talking about and what does a delete consist of? Thanks for all the help.

1st off I dont believe it is legal to modify the emissions system on the diesel so you may want to take that and your warranty into account

The DEF is Disel Exhaust Fluid it is to help keep all the soot out of the air. If you live where they do an emmison test you will need to keep all of the things you take off because to pass the test you will need to put them back on. On my 2011 at 50000 miles I have added def 6 times the first two times I bought def at the dealer and a parts store at a cost of $4.50 per gallon but since then I have bought it at truck stops for $2.89 per gallon so I have spent $67.00 or about $0.00134 per mile so for me it is not a problem to have it on the truck. :jester:

DEF and DPF are illegal to delete or modifty on the new trucks. The EPA has been cracking down hard lately in the past couple years. A lot of the tuning companies got hit hard and most shut down because they couldn't pay the fine the EPA put up against them. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $500,000.

We had state troopers come into our shop and tell us to let them know if we see any vehicles with deletes since we do a lot of diesel work, which we wont. If you take your modified vehicle to the wrong mechanic be prepared for a heavy fine.

Anyway back to the DEF, its not really that big of a deal. Most only need to fill it up about every oil change and its as simple as adding washer fluid. The performance impact these systems have on diesel trucks isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Also it helps keep the air clean and the black soot out of the air. I dont know about anyone else but i like clean air.

FWIW, the programming changes required to do a delete mean that your powertrain warranty will be void. There is lots of info there discussion pros, cons, and how-to-dos, but there is no work around for this issue on the LML platform (ie since the '11 model year)
