2007 gmc sierra / knocking and check traction control

Hello - I have a 2007 GMC Sierra with 116k in miles...Its the J code motor

This past weekend while driving i started hearing a knocking sound coming from motor and loss of power. The dash lights went crazy too (check engine and service traction control)...Some people are saying its a lifter issue or broken crank or cam shaft...I havent taken to dealer yet because its over 100k in miles and havent had the time yet....I know its difficult to diagnose but is this common?
