I have a 2014 Sierra. I ran the motor about 1500 miles today and decided to change the oil to get out the debris form the oil after a break in. after adding the 8.5 quarts it is reading over the full mark and up on the twists a little bit. Does anyone know why it is showing over full? Thank you for the help

Isn't that a bit extreme just to change oil?

Is the engine oil capacity 8 quarts or 8.5 quarts? Maybe you overfilled it just a bit.

Also, check the oil after you idled the engine for a minute or so, letting the new oil filter fill up with oil. Plus some oil will stay in the cylinder heads and not drain into the oil pan right away. This will drop the indicated oil level on the dipstick some.

The owners manual calls for 8.5Q of 0W-20. and I have read it on multiple other websites. it was even over the full line when I first bought the truck but I just figured id let it go. I was just wondering if anyone else has this happening to them

I thought that as well. Took a little drive afterwards and checked it when I got back home Its still a little above the full line but who knows. could be just oil in the dipstick tube. Im gonna give it all night to drain and check it again in the morning I guess

Is that with a new oil filter or without? Most of the time they will give you two different capacities, one with new oil filter and one without.

As for oil level above the full line, I have an old Army deuce and a half. The oil capacity is 22 quarts and when you put that much oil in and run the engine to fill two large oil filters, the oil level is still 1 inch above the full mark. They say that's normal. Go figure.

Perhaps someone else will chime in to say what their oil dipstick level is on a 5.3 engine.

Ive always filled up the oil filter before putting it on any vehicle but I understand what your saying. To answer your question. no it does not give two different specs

The capacity shown in the Owners Manual is with an empty (not pre-filled) filter. In other word, this is with a dry filter. You overfilled it by the amount that was put into the filter prior to installing it, probably ½ quart.

Engine Oil with Filter, 5.3L V8. 8.5 qt

I checked mine the other day. Had not been started for several days. It was above the full mark. Thats from the factory. Haven't had it it changed yet. I would keep putting 8 1/2 quarts like it calls for unless they say different sometime in the furture. And if you prefill the oil filter and your filling it with part of the 8 1/2 quarts thats not your problem. I used to prefill my filters years ago. It's really not necessary. Just let it idle for a few seconds. My old truck and the wifes Blazer have the filter mounted sideways so I can't prefill them anyway. I wonder if they will ever start making 1 liter bottles of oil. Then you could just dump in 8 instead of splitting one. Or a 8 liter jug. Got some transfer case fluid for the Blazer the other day and it was in a 1 liter bottle.

Checked my oil yesterday, had oil changed at dealer at 3000 miles, now have 6800 and oil is a little over the top fill mark. Have 5.3 engine.

I've been changing oil in cars for over 40 years. Virtually every vehicle shows well above the "full" line on the dipstick when the requisite oil quantity is added.

Yup, agreed. And it be higher yet if 8.5 qts. Is added in addition to filling the filter. As it was previously said, if you want to fill the filter, use part of the 8.5 qts. Before and after my oil change, my trucks oil level was / is also above the "full" level.
