1992 Sierra having weird oil pressure reading problem

Hello.

I have a 100% original 92 Sierra 2wd 1500 extended cab short bed. Truck runs and drives like new with 164000 miles. The only issue is that the oil pressure gauge in the dash only reads in about three positions., in the red, which trigger the check gauges light, at about 30, and then at almost 60. It reads the latter two when cruising, but when you slow down to idle at a stop light it dropsinto the red. You can leave it idling all day long with no problems, but the gauge reading zero is alerting. I replaced the sending unit already, everything else is running perfect.

Anyone know if the actual gauge can be bad? It seems to act like the old style dimmer switches we had in our 70.s hot rods, with that dial rheostat type reader. I was hoping to replace the gauge if I can find a new one.

You will need to hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge to either verify or dismiss your complaint.

I added a mechanical oil pressure gauge to mine(where the crank positioning sensor is).It reads much more accurately than the dash gauge.
