94 GMC 1500 Sierra fuel gauge or sending unit?

Recommended Posts

My fuel gauge is stuck way past full which apparently indicates bad ground or defective sending unit.

I just noticed it since I've been working on the dash panel. The dash panel is falling apart and has become so brittle that anything I try to do to it just breaks it into more pieces. So I went to a junk yard yesterday and found one that has a few cracks but is in much better shape that what I have.

I'll be installing that one soon and I'm wondering if there is a way to test the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster while I have it out. The gauge has been reading high (shows more than is in the tank) for some time but was still working. So I'm guessing the sending unit finally gave it up but I thought since I'll have the gauge out while repairing the dash I could test it before having to remove the fuel tank. Does anyone know the procedure for testing the gauge only or a site that has it?

BTW, I have multimeter and know how to use it.

Many thanks.
