My impressions of a 2015 (rented) Tahoe LT

Recommended Posts

So I flew back east for a friends wedding yesterday and managed to talk my way into an upgrade (normally SUVs have limitations for mileage when you use points to get a free rental).

The first thing I noticed was how high the load floor was. This was done to allow the 3rd row to be a truly fold-flat system. I only traveled with a duffel bag and my laptop case so this was a non-issue. I don't know the amount of space lost but having the back row be truly flat is worth the tradeoff in my opinion.

Inside, the interior is as good looking as the photos would lead you to believe. Everything is nicely finished and put together well. The biggest thing I liked was how the floor console is tapered in at the top. In previous Tahoes (and the rest of course), my knee would hit the side of the console and this would be uncomfortable on longer drives. The bottom seat cushion seems shorter which is one of my pet peeves on smaller cars so I was a bit surprised to find it here. But raising the seat cushion in the front a bit helped and overall I've found the seats to be quite comfortable.

The truck drives nicely overall and despite being brand new, it's returning 20 mpg in mixed driving which is pretty impressive I suppose. The transition between V8 and V4 is not totally transparent as some reviews have claimed but it is quite difficult to spot without having the display on. If I didn't own my Silverado that made me familiar with the characteristics of the system I probably wouldn't have noticed it without the display showing the mode. The one thing I don't like here is that the gas pedal requires what seems to be a lot of travel to get the truck moving, like it has a loose torque converter but this is something that an owner would just adapt to after a few days.

Overall I think it's quite nice. Not sure if they're worth the asking price but I'm not exactly the target demographic for these rigs so I'm not a good judge of that.

Probably had 3.08 gears. Those are the standard gears across all trims. Only way to get 3.42 is to get Max Tow on them.

I was watching an episode of Motorhead Garage the other day and they had a guy demonstrating a product that can correct the throttle lag and is completely adjustable. It simply plugs into the gas pedal electrical terminal.....sorry, don't remember the company name.

I was able to look at some Tahoes and Suburbans and one of my concerns was the rear cargo area. You can actually take out the lower storage compartment to give you a level surface and a few more inches of space. It will be like a NNBS tahoe in the back and won't be flat with the seats folded down.
