Rear end clunking noise

Recommended Posts

I have a '14 sierra that just rolled 5k miles and for the last 3 weeks or so I have a loud metallic "clunk" noise that sounds typical of a bad u joint. It happens when I let off the gas then reapply the gas while moving. Had the dealer check it out while in for the oil change. The service writer drove it with me in the passenger seat and duplicated the noise several times. Long story short, they had my truck for 7hrs and the tech said the noise was normal and sited a TSB number. The noise happens every drive and is loud and you can feel it in the cab.

Anyone else have this issue that actually found a fix? It's extremely annoying to have a new $40k truck with rear end problems. The local dealer has been absolutely no help.

Hello Nofastcar,

I see that you mentioned the dealership said the concerns you’ve experienced are normal and that your vehicle is operating as designed. I understand that you feel this concern with a loud clucking noise is not normal. I’m sorry your dealership was unable to assist further. However, I'd be happy to document your concerns in our system. Please send me a private message with your contact information and VIN to discuss further.

Thank you,

A quick internet search makes it seem like its a common problem. Not just in our body style either. Some guys are tapping a grease fitting into the yoke but I'm not about to do that to a truck with only 5k miles on it and 6 yrs of payment left.

wise move on your part, to make back yard fixes to 45k truck in warranty is about as unwise as it comes

Nofastcar, did you ever find a fix for this? I'm right around 5,000 miles now and have developed this same issue. I was thinking it was more of a transmission issue but I'm too having the "clunk" when downshifting and coming to a stop. Dealer says it's normal, it's getting really annoying...

Thanks,

I'm dropping the truck off tomorrow morning for the the dealer to look at it again. Also going for the 10,000 mi oil change and a vibration in the drivetrain that started a few weeks ago. Also tranission occasionally slips under moderate acceleration.

Just got over 3k miles and same problem here. Loud clunk when slowing down or accelerating. And not sure if its throttle lag or that I'm not used to the 6pd transmission but it does feel like the tranny slips when giving it the beans. Haven't been to the dealer yet but plan on taking it in soon as my suspension feels off as it gets bouncy at speeds greater than 60 causing the center console, front seats and overhead compartments to shake. Can't even store stuff in those areas as it gets annoying to hear them rattle.

Nofastcar, was the dealer able to find anything?
