2010 5.3 with 70k miles - What maintenance needs done??

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, it's been awhile since I posted in here but knock on wood, no problems at all with the truck. 2010 silverado ltz crew cab 4x4 z71 with the 5.3. I bought it with 30k on it and i'm up to 70k miles now. I haven't done anything to this truck pretty much. I change the oil and keep a good filter with full synthetic on it and I replaced the tires a few thousand miles ago. I did the 2" leveling kit at probably 55k miles and I had to align it then. That's it. The dash did crack just above the dash cluster for some reason and I'm not sure if I want to try to replace that or let it go yet.

I plan to keep the truck probably another 3 years.

Currently It's my daily driver. Work is 12 miles one way from me.

I pull an all aluminum enclose 4 place snowmobile trailer about 10 hours north once a year if that. And a landscape trailer a hand full of times a year maybe.

I do live in ohio so the 4x4 gets flipped on in the winter quite a bit actually.

I'm a volunteer firefighter so there are a few times it gets drove kind of hard to the station 1/2 mile down the road when the motor is cold. Not often. Small town here.

I'm not sure if it's time to change out any of the fluids on this thing or not. Sounds like a lot of miles on rear end fluids and things like that? No idea how long plugs last or wires and if there's even any advantage to changing them out? I'm looking for some kind of guideance here. I welcome any opinions please!!

I have considered putting an electric cut out on it, my cousin put one on his 6.0 and it's kind of fun every now and then! And i'd consider eliminating the AFM at that point. Maybe even if I don't do the cut out. I'm not a fan of it.

trans pan drop and filter

Plugs good 'till 100k

Check condition of:

I take a different approach with my 2013, as I have with all my vehicles. The entire drivetrain got fluid changes within 3000 miles of being bought new. good thing I did. The rear diff was almost 2 pints low on lube, the transfer case fluid looked like something from my septic tank and the magnetic plug had enough filings on it to look like someone stuck my cat's tail in a light socket. I even change the transfer case at 10,000 again just to see if it it was ok. A few more filings on the magnetic plug, but nothing to raise an eyebrow, and the fluid still looked nice and cherry. Has firmly solidified my idea that you can't trust quality control at assembly.

I love GMs, but you'll do a ton of maintenance before 100K, just because things will break.

You must of had a bad experience with a vehicle to say that, my experience has been completely the opposite. I started my 100k mile maintenance at 90k with diff fluid changes. I really can't say I had a "ton" of broke stuff before that, just normal wear and tear items and a couple of easy, relatively cheap repairs. I'm definitely not easy going on my truck as I just finished a 5k mile road trip across the US twice while towing and hauling.
