2015 YUKON NOISE IN CABIN

Recommended Posts

I've been looking at getting a Yukon/Tahoe for myself. We love my wife's 14 Silverado. But the thread scares the s*** out of me.

Better off looking at a truck or the previous gen fullsize SUV?

Good ones are out there, you just have to be willing to be diligent and test drive a lot of them

My wife has a 14 Silverado that seemed to have some slight vibration at higher speeds with 20's and the Continentals. Also had the dreaded V4 helicopter noise. We replaced with 22's and Michelins and it has never been smoother or quieter.

I hope these trucks are like the Silverado shake and just a few bad eggs out there.

Has anybody tried replacing they're exhaust?

So I took the 22s off, had Michelins mounted on the 20s.

The buffeting is faint at the 40 mph range, and the buffeting at the 70 range is completely gone.

The truck rides like it's gliding on air. It's like you don't even know it's there now.

One the drive home there were times I looked down and was shocked I was going 85/86. I had to slow down.

The vibrations were my indicator before. I knew I had hit 72 when the shake would start.

We ordered 5 dampers and installed 4 like other have.

I realize that other that had this done had a short wheel base. So it yiu look at FogDucker's photos, his muffler is immediately after the mesh joint. So his 2nd damper is right before the muffler.

On mine being an XL, I had a long stretch of pipe between the mesh joint and the miffler.

We placed the second damper in the middle of that pipe.

My booming is significantly reduced. But not completely gone. I'd say about 85% gone.

I'd attribute this to the 6.2L XL exhaust being much longer and larger than the short base 6.2L or the 5.3L like Ozzii has.

So when I return for an oil change, we'll put the 5th one on.

We're just going to slide the #2 damper in the middle of the pipe to the left and put it again the muffler and put anot her damper directly after the mesh.

FYI...

1) The dampers do not come with ubolts. GM has the dealer pick up basic items frim local shop or parts distributors that work for the dealership. So the part number for the ubolts Ozzii listed are specific to that dealership.

2) The dampers ubolt holes are sized for the 5.3L pipes at 2.75 inchest i believe. The 6.2L exhaust is wider at 3.5 inches. The shop foreman ordered the specific ubolts bracket assembly that fit the 3.5" piping.

The Yukon is a great drive now.

Update:

2/2 - Got call from dealership that the exhaust has been replaced and the technician said 99.9% of the buffering was gone. Went to pickup the Suburban, drove it home. Not only is the booming/buffering still there now the whole exhaust rattles!!! Unreal.

So now I have to go back to the dealership and fix the main issue - the booming/buffering noise - but also have to find out why the exhaust now rattles.

2/3 - Got call late today - exhaust rattle fixed. Engine motor mounts were replaced but did not help. They are now going to add foam insulation into roof and look at roof bows. Say should be done by tomorrow or early Monday. Chevrolet said they would not pay for road force balance so I went ahead and paid to have that done. Results came back that all 4 rims were in spec. Tech said he will show the before and after results to me when I pickup vehicle. So at this point the exhaust has been replaced, the motor mounts replaced and tires road force balanced. I'm following what I have to here with what Chevrolet is telling me but not sure what would be left to do if roof work does not fix issue....

One thing dealership told me is that the exhaust is different in design. Does anyone know what changed from '16 model to '17?

Today I took my 2015 Yukon Xl for a drive with the service manager. In the last week it has received the PIT5318C roof bow work and it received the PIT5404 exhaust system replacement. The service manager commented that the buffeting did not really improve until after the exhaust change. The difference in the exhaust is the valve for V4 used to be behind the muffler and with the revision it was moved to before the muffler. I guess this is logical since that would help deal with the change in tone when you go into V4 mode. There is still a vibration that will be measured with the PICO (sp?) meter to help isolate, but he acknowledged its presence and wants to use the equipment to hone in on the source. I have had my rear tires RFB 2X since October.post-19164-0-73605000-1486325564_thumb.jpg

We had a 2016 Yukon had exhaust changed, roof rails fixed but that made it worse. We bought a 2017 Tahoe Premier and now we have the booming in the cab also have vibration through out the Tahoe. Complained to dealer about a surging/skipping problem when trying to go up hill dealer was close to telling us it was normal according to GM specs but then dealer checked and found GM put out a bulletin stating they are aware of the problem but do not have a fix as of 1/09/2017. The dealer will not try to fix the booming or vibration till GM gives them a repair for the skipping/hesitation/surging. The dealer said that this problem might be linked to my other issues. After many calls/emails to GM executive customer care they are supposedly going to send a field engineer out to look at my booming problem when they TRY to fix the skipping/etc problem.

Any updates on your booming?

Took my Yukon in for a rattle in the back window and drove a 2017 Denali. It 100% had the booming/buffeting sound while in V4.

I still have a love hate relationship with my Yukon. Love it for its looks and capacity but HATE the build of the truck....

My issues still are present with no available fixes in sight.....
1) Booming and Buffeting still occurring after all the "fixes".
2) Rough idle
3) VERY Rough acceleration ( the dealership told me to use premium top tier fuel...uggggg)

4) Slight shaking at speeds above 70

Thanks all I can think of right now.
Lesson learned, I will NEVER buy another vehicle without doing my research. (This is my 4th Yukon and never thought I would have this many issues that "can't be fixed"

I just bought a 2017 Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate 4 days ago. I took it back to dealership 2 days later becaude of the headaches anx sickness i was getting after driving. They pulled the fuse on the noise cancelling, but the issue persists. I have nearly 200 miles on it now and passed the 72 hour exchange window (not return, but exchange). After reading through the forums here, it sounds like I'm screwed or in for a very long battle at least. I'm contemplating just trying to trade it in right now for something that won't make me sick. I know I'll take a loss, I just hope it's not too bad. I just mention this to say 2017 model and the issue is still not fixed.

Same here, but I've had Escalades. The only complaint with my GMT900s was lack of sound insulation.

My '15 Escalade was a LEMON, had everything you've described plus a host of electrical problems.

The '16 has the "Chevy Shakes" and transmission issues.

It's a shame that you dread driving a $95k vehicle.

So I took the 22s off, had Michelins mounted on the 20s.

The Yukon is a great drive now.

Hey SierraMyst,

Did you dealer/GM pay for the dampers and their installation or was that out of your pocket? They seem pricey at $56/each plus brackets - installation I can handle. My 2016 Denali only has booming and I want it fixed but don't want to get stonewalled at the dealer. The service write will say they have no knowledge of the fix or part numbers and I do not have the energy or time to fight with them. I need to go in armed. Any thoughts and experience are appreciated. I've read through previous posts but didn't see how you initiated the fix.

Thanks in advance.
