Gap between the front shafts and the hub

Have you noticed the large gap between the front CV shafts and the Hub assembly. It's fairly large, I can see it filling up with crap and damaging the seal, especially if you go offroad a lot.

It just seems unusual to me that the gap would be so large, it is definitely a easy place for dirt and debris to get trapped and cause issues eventually.
