2008 Impala Key stuck in Ignotion

Common problem from what I hear....it's my friends daughters car. My buddy wants to remove pins from the connector at the Shifter (where the problem is), and replace them with new pins with heavier gauge wires, and splice into the existing wire harness.....I was hoping for something easier, and was thinking if the suspect wire needed a ground to release the key, just ground the wire permanently......haven't really looked into it, and was hoping to hear from the guys who deal with this daily.

Buddy called last night, and needed a hand to get it done. Could not find new Connector Pins, so reused the old ones.....ended up soldering the new heavier gauge wire to the old pins, and snapping them back into the connector.....works.....hopefully a good fix as his daughter is taking the car to college in North Carolina
