Wrong Door Handles on 2014 GMC Sierra

Recommended Posts

So this is my first post on this forum and I am sad to say it's not a happy one. Just picked up my 2014 GMC Sierra SLT (with the 6.2L) this past Saturday. Just noticed today that the door handles on my Driver's Side are the regular black textured plastic and the Passenger Side is Chrome. I am assuming since I have an SLT, they should all be Chrome? I have a call out to the dealer now, so still waiting to see what they say about correcting this.

So my question is, do the interior panels need to be removed to replace the exterior handles?

Has anyone else experienced or heard about this potential QC issue with GMC? Sounds like some on the assembly line probably just had a bad day.

Thanks for any thoughts or help!

I'm more wondering how the dealership didn't catch this before you taking delivery. Oh wait, its a dealership that's why....

Because you dont see both sides at the same time. You see one side and your brain sees black handles on both doors and your brain says, "that looks right." then later you are on the other side of the truck and you see chrome handles on the doors, and your brain still says, "yep thats right."

If the doors had one chrome and one black on the same side, then youd see the difference faster.

It's an easy fix. No, the interior door panels do not need to come off. The dealership techs have a special tool that facilitates a quick swap. I had my dealer swap out my black handles for chrome ones when I bought it. They changed them out in no time. Its nothing to get upset about, thats for sure.

So if the door panels don't come off I will assume this can be done without even opening the door?? Or is there something on the jam side of the door that you have to access??

You have to open the door to get at a screw to remove the door handle. The driver's door handle removal is a little harder to do because of the door lock reset to the new handle.

I was told today by my dealer that all the vehicles come with black handles from the factory but the dealers are the ones who put the chrome on. So whoever did yours did the one side, got busy, and completely forgot the other side. 10 min fix don't sweat it.

huh? you don't have to reset anything when you have swap out the drivers side door handle. the driver side door handle has the exact same steps as the other three. the only difference is when you replace it you have to make sure the end cap has the key hole in it.

Same thing. Reset into new door handle for a key to lock and unlock vehicle.
