Going in for Frame Rust TSB (free undercoating?)

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am dropping my truck off on Monday to have the frame rust TSB fix done. It has been a couple of weeks waiting for the dealership to get the products ordered in they need to re-coat the frame. The TSB lists what they are, but it is not just 3M undercoating, it is a 2 step process that is supposed to be almost exactly like the original coating. I saw one member's truck on here (topaz blue) looked like they removed the truckbed, but his looked awesome. Hope mine turns out as well.

In addition to the TSB fix, the service manager says he would like to undercoat my truck free of charge. I assume this is sprayed on (probably and extra thing that was offered when I bought the truck). He said they would do all the steel brake lines and spray under the box? I know very little about this. I definitely don't want a bunch of goop sprayed all over everything making it difficult to service suspension parts etc down the road. Does this have to be maintained or reapplied in the future?

My truck is not the worst that I have seen, but it is bad enough to bother me when I see it. So here it goes! Ill post some after pics after it has been done.

Also advice on what to do about this undercoating business would be much appreciated.

Nathan

I complained about this durring my last oil change, the service writer tryed to downplay this and basically called me stupid for worring about it, but he did use a can of the GM spray and hit all of my rust spots then killed the can coating the bottom of the frame rails. We'll see how it looks when I'm due to go in again.

Where is it the cheapest place to purchase the GM 12346501 including shipping cost etc? The only place I saw it at reasonable cost was at Quality One Auto Parts for $14.03 which includes shipping cost to my door. Every other place wanted $18 -$20 when you add the shipping cost.

If the dealer (under coating) is putting it on for free, I would do it. The CT roads in the winter are very bad with all the salt they put on the roads. So what you have to check on it once a year. If the dealer puts it on it will not hurt your warranty and maybe covered for the three years anyways. I think it is worth the protection.

I get a wholesale discount at my dealer. I paid just under $9 per can. This can has touched up a couple of trucks, and still has some left over. A couple of can should touch up many large areas without an issue.

The dealer list for the stuff is $13.84 a can excluding tax.

With shipping, it's $13.88 a can on E-bay.

For what it's worth, the factory original just a dip in hot wax.

@LTZTom a TSB is a technical service bulletin used at the dealership to address common issues on vehicles.

If you google TSB's for the silverado a couple come up.

Thanks for the info.

I always have a can or two of rubberized undercoating around to hit areas I can see, if one pops up. Most of my work was off road so I would drag the undercoat off anyway. I was only worried about what I could see through the wheel openings. I never had a rust through problem, cant imagine that happing before the truck dies.
