Engine options. Stay with 5.3 or get a 6.0?

Recommended Posts

Okay guys, last Tuesday I was coming home from NC, when I noticed my engine light started flashing. (I'm like well that's not good) So, I was on I-77 & looked up and noticed a Rest Area sign. So, I took that route to park it. Started bogging down pretty bad. So, I turned it off. Knowing that it won't turn back on. I checked the fluids and everything looked good. Nothing burnt. But it wouldn't start over. Then this random guy showed up with Snap On engine scanner. Showing my plugs were misfiring.

So, I get a rollback & take it to the shop. Well this morning, I checked on it. He said you want the good news or bad news first. I'm like ehhhhh, probably don't wanna know I stated. Well anyways, he pulled the driver side of my spark plugs and said they really bad. Where the electrode is, it's bent. So, he said something came off the engine and bent my plugs up. So, fml. I need an engine.

So, should I get a brand new one or an used one? Truck is' 07 1500 5.3L which had 172K on it. I plan on keeping it for another 3-5 years probably. Unless I get all my credit cards paid off, my personal loan, and 4wheeler payment. Then might be in the market for a brand new Chevy or GMC 6.2L truck. It's always something.

Options are I was gonna get a 6.0 to drop in it. I always said that if it ever went down. Should I get one or stick to the 5.3L? I have 4.56 gears and it's Black Bear tune. So, I dk what to do guys. Thanks!

I'd go with the 6.0 for one simple reason - no AFM. Unless, of course, you already had it disabled with your tune.

I have both - an '01 with the 5.3 and an '08 with the 6.0. The LY6 6.0 loves to rev, sounds awesome, and is a blast to drive. If it was me, the 6.0 is a no-brainer.

Yes I already had it disabled with my tune. Been like that for the last 50K miles.

I wanna go the 6.0 route, but what does it take to hook up properly to my truck? Does any 6.0 work or does it have to be the LY6 6.0?

If you can find a good deal on a 6.0 I'd do it, but you have to remember that your trans might not hold up to it so well especially with over 170k on it

I was thinking about that earlier. what's the difference in the transmissions in a 5.3 truck and a vortex max 6.0?

Some of the 6.0L engines have AFM. I know my 08 V-Max does.

Can someone help me with the swap? What all do I need? I know I need the Gen 4 IIRC. Since, I'm getting a 6.0. That's what I want. I finally moved out and got my own place and I'm starting to tow a little bit. I hardly ever did with my 5.3, except 1 time last month. Kinda amazing, since I had it since '09.

LY6 is the Iron block one right? Does that make a big difference between the aluminum one

Not sure. I went from iron to iron. I would imagine motor mounts may be the furthest you would have to go, but my guess is it will work

So, you have the LY6? What did my 5.3 have, iron? Where can I go to find everything out I need to know
