Really want to buy

Recommended Posts

I am looking at a 2011 gmc Sierra with the 5.3. I like it a lot but I keep hearing horror stories about the AFM systems. Can they be deleted and if so does it stop the problems with oil consumption. Thanks for any input on the subject.

The AFM issues are blown way the hell out of proportion. GM sells hundreds of thousands of AFM-equipped motors every year. There are a few with issues but the majority are problem free. You have to realize the Internet forums make up a tiny, tiny fraction of actual owners. Only reason I had mine turned off was due to drone with the exhaust system I installed. 66k and the only non-maintenance item has been a throttle position sensor that was covered under an extended service campaign. A 2015 Silverado is at the top of my list to replace this one next spring.

I think you are right. I just got off the phone with a friend with 2010 and he said he has 120,000 on his and he loves it. It seems as it is just a few. And before I drove it I drove and new 3.5 eb ford f-150 and it had the speed. But everything else wasn't up to par for me. Plus I love my 06 Tahoe it has 226,000 miles on it and it is still running strong. I guess I shouldn't listen to others and just go with what I like. Thanks for the info.

I had the same thoughts before I bought my 2012. It had 34,000 miles when I bought it, it now has just over 42,000 miles and one oil change. It didn't use a drop of oil during the first oil change. I checked it constantly for that reason.

On the same note, I had a 2000 Trans Am when everyone was complaining about piston slap. I put 90,000 hard miles (many at the dragstrip) and I never hear a peep out of the engine. Never used oil either.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, as long as the truck has been well maintained and sounds good.
