2007+ Chev Silverado 2500hd emergency brake cable installation

Recommended Posts

Just commentary on installing a new e brake cable to the driver's side rear disc assembly, as I couldn't find much on line......

-new cable must match the wheelbase of your truck!

-remove the rear rim, after raising and securing your truck

-thread the new one through the same hoops and holes that the old one was in. Clever, no?

-secure the forward sheath fitting into the Y connector (where the rr cable joints).

-use a small racket strap from the Y connector to anything forward, to pull slack from the left and right cables astern. Join the new cable end to the forward intermediate e brake cable. Slack off and remove the racket strap.

-at the wheel end of the new cable, you'll want to compress the spring slightly to make it easy to attach the cable end fitting. Poke a pair of needle nose plier tips through the hole in the end fitting. Open the pliers to the limit of the fitting's slot, thereby compressing the spring enough. A wheel lug is a handy 'third hand' for this, as you'll need your second hand to lamp vices grips to the edge of the cable end fitting. Now it's easy to put the new cable end fitting onto the brake lever arm.

-you may need a helper now, to guide the other end of the spring into place while you fit the sheath end into it's open sided socket. Tuck the spring against the forward side do the socket, then pull on the sheath from behind. You should get just enough slack to move the sheath end into it's socket and position the spring (just where the old one was, right?)

-don't forget to bolt the cable bracket down now, just behind the axle

-if you can't pull enough slack, backing off the e brake shoes is doable by removing the rubber grommet in the backing plate and turning the star adjuster with a slot driver
