Need Help...Tired of this issue!

Recommended Posts

Last winter I changed the intake gasket set on my 98 GMC sierra 5.7 L. Ever since I replaced it, it's a hit and miss chance of starting the first time and it never starts smoothly. Last winter it got down to the single digits and wouldn't start for about 5 min. so it gets worse when it's cold, especially when I would leave work, drive 10 minutes to the gym then shut it down, it took forever to start back up. Tonight I've had the most drastic issue. I was trying to pass someone going up hill and not only did the truck seem like it wasnt hardly accelerating but when I pushed the pedal down more to try and get it to go the entire truck started to vibrate as if the wheels were coming off. It wasn't until I backed off and quit accelerating for a bit that it finally stopped (after about 8 sec.)

Rundown: I replaced the intake gaskets last winter, fuel pump about two winters ago. The truck now has 135 k on it and I haven't given it a tune-up since 80 K. I have not tried a fuel pressure test yet and I don't believe it's the pump because it didn't start this until after the intake. I think it may be the fuel psi reg, but not sure?

Please HELP!!! I'm getting crappy gas mileage and the truck has less power now then when I first did the intake set.

Thanks.

Have you ever replaced the in-line fuel filter under the drivers side door on the inside of the frame? I had a 91 Suburban that displayed the same problems and was a total gutless pooch for a 350, it could hardly get out of it's own way! I took the filter out and it was so plugged you could barely blow air through it, I was amazed the truck even ran. Put in a new filter and it was like I picked up about 50 HP and then ran perfect.

Distributor is in wrong or ign system is junk

Should be a code for distributor in wrong

I'm with govtech4 on this one. Sounds like the distributor is one tooth off, or the timing is just way off.

Any white smoke? If so, could be leaking coolant into one or more of the combustion chambers.

Did you try spraying carb cleaner along the intake - head interface? If the engine speeds up, you have a vacuum leak.

One tooth off on the distributor and I'd expect it would not run well at all and cold or warm weather would not have anything to do with it, it would run like crap no matter. Did it once myself, so I know and it was 80 F that day! :banghead:
