92 gmc 3500 HD motor swap

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I am new here and if this is the wrong forum, I apologize.

I have a 92 3500 HD with a 350 and a new process MT8 5 speed. I also have a 93 Chev 3500 HD with a 454 and a 4 spd auto, both TBI. I would like to know if the MT8 will work on the 454....will it handle the extra power etc. The 93 is a parts donor, but its basically the same truck. Also, will I run into any other problems? Any info I can get would be muchly appreciated! Thanks

Wow, no replies yet??

I'm new here too, but I'll try and help you out.

Me thinks what you propose will work fine. You'll probably have to take the cross members along with the transmission. However, they should simply bolt in. Be mindful of the shift/linkage cables. You'll probably want to transfer them first. And you'll probably need to figure a way around the cooler lines.

I figured my way around the cooler lines by going the AN / steel braided route when I did an engine swap on the wife's 1999 Tahoe. (There are literally dozens of threads and youtube videos on this.)

Be mindful of the actual length of the transmissions (and driveshafts) relative to the other. Since it wasn't mentioned, I'm assuming the trucks are not four wheel drive, so there is no transfer case(s) to deal with. If the lengths are different, you will probably need the donor's drive shaft. However, it should simply bolt in.

That's all I can think of off hand.

Good luck

Thanks for your reply....I was wondering if anyone even saw this. The transmission in question is a 5 sp manual, so I am thinking that everything that way would remain the same. My biggest concern is weather the transmission will be heavy enough to handle a 454 instead of the 350. I use this truck to haul vehicles/scrap metal and the 350 is just not enough motor for what I'm doing.

My thoughts are run it. Then IF you have problems deal with it then.

As long as it has been taken care of and you don't abuse it then it should do just fine.

Couple things here that are not mentioned; both ecm's are programmed for their own tranny/rear end gear ratio's, how are you going to mix match that combo?

Personally, I would run the auto tranny with the 454 that came attached to it, also move the ecm with it plus rear end ratio if it's different.
