2014 Silverado 6L80 Questions

Question

2014 Chevy Silverado RegCabShortBed, 5.3L, 3.42, 6L80

2 questions

1) Does the transmission behave in any different manner when in "D" vs "M6"?

2) My transmission routinely operates in the 195* - 205* range. It has the trailering package so I know it has the external cooler. It concerns me because this is without hauling or towing. Is this abnormal?

Standard trans cooler is sitting in the engine coolant. I would expect that when engine is at normal operating temps, the trans oil will not actually be cooled by the coolant until it gets hotter than the radiator. On long highway runs, the transmission will likely be helping the radiator cool the engine coolant.

What does the owners manual for the 2014 state about the normal numbers to see in the trans temp gauge or readings? While in the manual, take a look in the section about controls available to driver. It will likely explain difference between D and M shifter modes.

There are no numbers that I saw anywhere for trans temps especially the owners manual ........ I know !!!... Makes no sense , I could be wrong but I have GM info so IDK

D or M6 it should drive the same. In M5 it will lock out 6th gear and disable AFM.

The trans temp is normal. These new trucks have a thermostatic bypass valve I believe, in the trans lines where they mount to the trans to get the transmission hot and up to optimal temps before flowing to the cooler. Done for efficiency IIRC. 160-200F is normal operating temp.

A safe operating fluid level is within the HOT crosshatch band on the dipstick. If the fluid level is not within the HOT band, and the TFT is between 160°F and 200°F (71°C and 93°C), add or drain fluid as necessary to bring the level into the HOT band. If the fluid level is low, add only enough fluid to bring the level into the HOT band. It does not take much fluid, generally less than one pint (0.5L). Do not overfill. Also, if the fluid level is low, inspect the transmission for leaks. Refer to Fluid Leak Diagnosis.
