Truck @ the dealer for a loud ticking noise

Recommended Posts

Well as much as it sucks I had to take my 9200 mile truck into the dealer this morning for a ticking noise in the engine bay that just started last night. I am no mechanic by any stretch but to me it sounds like a lifter tapping on the passenger side of the block. Oil pressure is good and no warning lights....not sure if that is a good thing or not. Service writer at the dealer seemed like a good guy. Told him my situation and reason for bringing it in without an appointment. He came out and started up the truck and his response was "that's definitely not right"....no kidding. Haha So waiting for word on what it is and the time frame for fixing it. Kinda bummed but I know it's just a truck and they will fix it.

a little ticking is just the Direct injection. a LOUD ticking would be something more major.

Good ears. let us know what they find out.

Most definitely not the normal DI ticking. It's pretty loud and I noticed it seemed louder at cold start up this a.m.. Sounds like an old beater right now. I will definitely keep the thread updated.

Holly freaking crap!!!!!!

Just got a call from the service manager at the dealer. Long story short....He is telling me that the computer holds codes when things are altered (you see where this is heading) and I have a definite problem with my truck. (he did not say what it was and I was so upset I forgot to ask) When he hooks up the computer to it it is giving him 10 different codes that will throw a flag to GM and they will block my warranty so I am out of luck. I did not lose my cool but I am so upset I am shaking.....I TOLD HIM NO WAY IS THIS HOW ITS GOING DOWN. i HAVE NOT TOUCHED THAT TRUCK AND NO ONE ELSE HAS TOUCHED THAT TRUC!!@!!!! I bought that thing with 5-7 miles on the odometer and even bought an extended warranty to 120K because I wanted a known good truck. He tells me his hands are tied and he doesn't know what to do. I told him I am not mad at you but this is not going to happen. I will get an attorney and fight this for everything it's worth.....I have not touched this truck nor would I try and hide it.

I have no idea what to do next. I am so upset I am shaking right now. He said he would talk to the head mechanic after lunch and get back with me. I said I am fine with that but please let me know what my next step is and who I need to contact regionally because I refuse for this to happen to me!!!!

Today sucks!! ha

I asked him if the computer could malfunction and store codes that aren't correct and he didn't really respond. Anyone know?

Sorry I am just kinda rambling here....my mind is going 100 mph.

I did just call the service department to see what is actually wrong with my truck and didn't reach the guy I had talked to so I just left a message.

They probably do those codes so they do not have to do warranty work. If you get nowhere contact AAA they used to set up an arbitration for problems. I blew a motor once,at 20K. Dealer said it was my fault for not bringing it in for oil changes. (did it myself and had all receipts in folder). Took truck to the shop where they told me to go. Mechanic tore down motor and documented no oil related failures, determined it was a bad piston rod that shattered and blew holes in both sides of block. 2 weeks later new block and all repairs with new motor warranty. This is why I never tuned mine, didn't want to go thru anything like that. Sometimes they catch a tune and sometimes they don't.

If you truly haven't altered anything the truth will come out and you should be ok.

Did you ever use the V8 range device, because that will sometimes throw codes.

Did he at least give you an indication of what is wrong with the truck?

I 100% have never touched the truck....no chips....no AFM devices....nothing!

I told the guy I know you have to pay to play but I am not and have not been playing. I will fight this for all it's worth. Still waiting on the call back....I will update shortly.

Trust me, if they look for current or previous tune, GM will find it.

Been there done that on a 2009 Corvette

Just got off the phone with the head mechanic.

Basically he explained to me that these trucks keep record of when and if things are changed and when he goes into mine that it shows the program has been altered 10 times total and that even the current tune in it is not a (to him) a know GM tune. He asked me what I wanted him to do....because once he calls it in GM is going to ask for the log/record from the truck and they will deny the factory warranty and my 120K extended mile warranty. He said something is wrong with the #6 cylinder and he is not sure if what exactly it is but if he shuts down that cylinder it stops. Could be lifter but he isn't sure. He told me once GM denies the claim (as of now if they deny) that it will be up to me to prove I didn't do anything to the truck. I told him BS...the burden of proof is on GM. I am the one with a brand new $50K truck with a factory warranty and it's up to them to prove I did anything wrong. They will lose that battle....I HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG.

I am at a complete loss. I love this truck and have never touched it except to add my oil catch can and to polish/wax it.

I told him to call it in to GM and tell them my situation if they balk at it. And if they do....well I guess it's time to lawyer up. I'm sick to my stomach right now! Said he is going to call me as soon as he hears from GM and in the meantime he isn't sure I can get a loaner vehicle to me. So that means I will have to maybe get a rental on MY DIME. I wish my time machine wasn't broke and I could go back to early spring and just get the Tundra I was looking at. I have always been a GM guy but this is just crazy. The truck has never been out of my sight since I picked it up with 7 miles on it. And the only time it has been to any service or dealer is to take it to the shop where it sits now for oil changes.

Sorry for the ramble....my mind is jumping all over the place here.

Any advice?

Newdude, that's a good question. When I talk to them next I will be sure to ask for all documentation of codes and current tune # in it right now.

They seem awfully sure that some of the calibrations are not GM calibrations. We had a Camaro that sent a rod through the side of the oil pan. We screenshot the calibration history and the most recent one or two calibrations, when we sent the screenshot to GM were not GM calibrations and were from a tune of some sort. It wasn't untill we sent that information to GM did we know however. The tech seems pretty sure without even sending them in yet, which seems like they might be pointing the gun at you in the sense that you modded and a hard part failed, its on you. Seems to rushed to do that without GM getting the calibrations info.

My thoughts exactly. On one hand I like the fact he is being upfront with me about the possibility of what could happen and giving me time to bail and fix it myself and keep my warranty (which would be what I would do had I hotrodded this thing or messed with it) but on the other hand when he tells me I have to prove myself....no way. It's up to them to prove I did something wrong and I can sleep easy at night knowing I have done nothing wrong.
