Trivial annoyances about your truck

OK, I know there's absolutely no perfect vehicle out there, so I thought some of you could post up the little things, if any, that annoy you about your truck. This does not include the subjects that have been beaten to death (vibes, seat, radio, ect). I'll start:

HVAC indicator lights for a/c, vent, ect. too small and dim, sometimes I have to squint to see their status.

With the tilt steering set where I like, the fuel, oil psi, amp, temp gauges are cut out of view by the top of the wheel.

........and that's it, how about you?

  • a built in 4" lift kit from GM making it unusable as a working truck since you cant access the bed from the sides

the hood is too flat and unnecessarily squared off making seeing what you are pulling up against near impossible.

too much wasted space that could have been used to make the truck smaller lighter and better on gas.

gets worse gas mileage then my 1998 Silverado 1500 with the v8 350 engine even though its so super technical and all aluminum.

work trucks have no indicator when its in v4 or v8 modes.

very limited size of glove box and extra storage space makes them not very useful.

the drink holders that drain into the console storage box when something is spilled in it is a really bad idea and the guy who designed it should be fired

-puddle lamps don't work unless you turn on the Vehicle Locator Lights setting - which I keep off because I don't like lighting up the whole area every time I unlock my truck at night

-should have auto-up on all of the windows

-should have came with a factory power tailgate lock

-I have 2 kids with booster seats and I help buckle them in, and it seems hard to stick each belt clip into the rear buckles (by feel without looking), I always have to climb up into the truck and look exactly for the buckle slot and stick it in. Maybe the buckles just need broken in some more as I haven't hauled my kids around that many times yet.

Well you can do what I did about getting into the bed and get side steps that are extended past the cab. I have N-fab bed access steps but there are other brands that have bed access type steps. I've had bed access steps on my last truck also. Helps a lot to get into my toolbox which is why I get bed access steps.

Also as for the gas mileage. What the hell are you doing to get that bad of mileage? My last truck coincidentally was also a 98 1500 with the 350 and 3.73 gears and it only got about 11 mpg in town and 15 mpg on the highway if I drive right. It was stock height (just leveled) and had normal highway tires on it. My '14 has the 5.3 gets roughly 15-16 in town and 22-23 on the interstate. Those #s is still in V8 mode, in V4 mode it's even better of course. Oh and the new truck is only a touch longer since the 98 was ext cab and the '14 is double cab, so the weight is probably damn near close.

Not sure about the work trucks, but my LT has plenty of storage. When I first got the truck everywhere I looked was a cubby hole or some kind of storage. I have the flip up center console which it also has another storage place under where the 3rd front seat is.

As for the OP's question. The thing I wish it had was an indicator on the dash screen saying rather it's in 2wd, 4hi or 4lo. It's not really a big deal since you can just look at the knob. It should have the indicator in case you have it on auto 4x4. I don't keep it on auto 4x4, but I plan to try it in auto if we get any snow storms this winter. I know it tells you when shifting is in progress, but would be nice to tell you if it's in 4hi or 4lo when in auto 4x4.

Really the only other thing would be that the front is too low, even the 4x4 and 4x4 Z71 models. I did fix it for now but removing the plastic valance from the bottom of the front bumper which helped a lot. I still plan on leveling or doing a small 2 inch lift.

Lastly I wish mine didn't have the 3.08 gears but I plan on changing them to lower gears when I'm able to.

Being that I went from a 98 to this '14 it took a good 2 or 3 days of learning where everything is and how it all works and change thing to how I want. Just wasn't used to all the electronics in the cab so I had to adjust to it. So far I'm very pleased with it and I'm glad I got it.

I don't want to need "helper" steps to get in and out of the truck, that was why its listed under my annoyances but its not as big a deal as not being able to load and unload stuff over the side rails.

as to mpg, my 98 1500 with the 350 and 3.73 gears even after 120,000 miles got 18 mpg in town and 21 mpg on the highway if I drive right and I checked it at the pump with every fill up so I know that was accurate

but my brand new 2014 gets 16.3 mpg city and 18.4 mpg (at best) on highway and that sucks for a 2014 truck with all the advanced tech they have in this thing. and as for driving style, you can tell the way I drive by the mileages I got with the 98, I drive like a grampa with no where to go and in no hurry to get anywhere so the average would be worse if I drove "normally" as others do.

by the way, the crew cabs with 18" tires and rims I drove while mine was in the shop were much better and averaged 19 mpg city and 21 highway so I don't know why my regular cab with 17" tires and rims does so poorly but it does

the lack of storage I was referring to was just inside the glove box and the extra box above it that's only good for sunglasses or a book

also I need to add to the list, the drink holders that drain into the console storage box when something is spilled in it is a really bad idea and the guy who designed it should be fired
