Is the Regular Cab Pickup Doomed?

I sure hope the regular cab doesn't go anywhere. I don't think there is a better looking or more classic pickup than a regular cab 4x4.

While I would be saddened if a lack of consumer demand ushers in the departure of the regular cab pickup, I could see where the companies are coming from.

If regulations cause the demise of the regular cab pickup...well, that's another story.

These regs are so destructive. Bunch of crap from pencil pushing morons who don't even know what it means.

Just so we ALL remember who these pencil pushing morons are, they are your politicians who will be looking for your vote in a few weeks.

Spend a few minutes looking up their voting record before casting your vote.

The EPA can be pruned back with the right people above them. The last 8 years they have had free reign to impose all that they can dream up.

The EPA will get pruned back, getting too much power, starting to causes more harm than good, like every other gov. agency does. Running out of oil and gas not hardly. Technology will keep that coming. Man made globule warming, its getting ready to be called climate change, now we are cooling just like in the seventies. Wind mills kill birds, solar panels fry animals, you really didn't see that coming? The best for last plug in cars, where do you think that power comes from, kinda like making fuel from food, oh yea we do that to.

It's not gonna happen in the 'democratic' way...to much lobbyism and not enough oil left.

so long

j-ten-ner

Plenty of oil left, it's just the EPA does everything it can to prevent anyone in the US from getting to it.

Here in OK, once Oil capital of the world, they just found a huge formation that will move OK to #3 in US oil production.

I have been waiting for this, the mass oil business in OK died out over 50-60 years ago, and with all the new technology, they were bound to find a lot left behind.

I would say extended cab trucks or smaller crew cabs such as the double cabs would get the boot before reg cabs... I've seen very very few double cab trucks around me.. IMO

I think you're right here.

since 2004 the crew cab 4 door trucks have been HUGE sellers compared to the X cab model trucks. RCSB is still popular among folks who want a cheap maneuverable full size pickup, and RCLB is still pretty common among commercial w/t type deals. I see more RCSB and CC trucks than I see X cab trucks in 2004 and newer trucks.

I love a RCSB truck, it's a real thing of beauty, and they're a blast to drive with that short little wheel base, you can whip them around like a passenger car and still have the ride height comfort and utility of a truck.. for you and 1 other person.

I didn't get a RCSB for 2 reasons.

1. you can't get em loaded. I want a center console! I don't see why this is so hard. I also want the 6.2. (Can you imagine what a monster that would be?) Sure, my CC isn't loaded, but point #2 explains that one.

2. I have parents that don't have a reliable 4dr vehicle, and when I'm visiting or they're visiting we need something they can ride with me comfortably. It's also convenient if I ever find myself with a family.

If I won the lotto, yea.. I'd be back at the dealership picking up half their inventory, and a RCSB 2wd and a 4wd would be on the list.

Of the new 2014 GM trucks with the guys I work with, the Double Cabs hold half the numbers. They are real popular here in Michigan with the guys in my age group. Early to mid 50's, empty nesters, with no or very young grandchildren. I personally am 53, empty nest, no grandkids (yet), youngest is 25, just finished 6th year of college May 2013, I bought in September 2013. The Double Cab with the standard box fits well in the same space a Crew Cab with short box fits without giving up the extra bed length. I don't have anyone riding in back on any regular basis, but the space is there when needed. Grandkids someday I hope, but that is out of my control at this point. I do a lot of hunting, and it is nice to have my gear secured in the cab, and the Double is perfect for my needs. I'll never own another regular cab, or a Crew Cab, as long as they keep making the Doubles. The Double Cab is here to stay, IMO. YMMV, in your area?

The dealers around here have an even mix of Doubles and Crews, and maybe one or two Regular Cabs. Most of the Regular Cabs are of the work truck variety. They just don't sell in this area.

Here is a run down of the 2014 GM's where I work.

1 Regular Cab Chevy Short Box

3 Double Cabs, 2 Chevy's, 1 GMC

2 Crew Cabs, Both Chevy's

The only two reasons I don't buy a reg cab is, one they don't load them up anymore and sometimes on a trip my wife likes to rest in the back. I still rather have a extended cab.

Last I heard the stats I think crew cabs numbered in and around 75%ish of the sales. I wonder if that will change now that the regular bed (6 1/2') bed is available in the crew cab as well. To me for the price difference I would much rather just have a crew.

As for the single cab, I can't see them getting rid of those either.
