WOW - Ford Ratings

Recommended Posts

Ford is saying the new F150 can haul over 12k and has a payload of 3300lbs. Impressive to say the least. After owning one I would have no hesitation in that eco handling it from a engine perspective. Curious though since the truck lost weight, what about its axles and ability to brake.

I still contend a half ton regardless of what engine is in it, the eco chump or the guilded 6.2l or not, Im not so sure hauling a 11-12k load is the most brilliant thing to do.

Yeah so much of the weight needs to be on the pickup and there's only so much you can distribute. To me heavy load = heavy towing vehicle or you're asking for trouble. These newer pickups are getting close to the same vehicle:cargo ratio as some commercial vehicles and IMO with inexperienced operators that's asking for trouble.

moved to the correct section and changed the topic title so it is more descriptive

You killed the awesome discussion that would have happened. But I agreed with the title change

And look Semis tow way more than what they weigh. But you are also looking at professional drivers and the set ups between the truck and the trailer are much different than what us newbs have in our driveways.

impressive numbers, but imo, ram and gm will be better soon enough. Ford had to use tons of aluminum to finally be lighter than at least GM, not sure if the rams were heavier than the fords or not. If GM is headed in the same direction (which it most likely is) with lots of aluminum in the body panels, then GM will be on top soon enough.

That is a very impressive payload for a 1/2 ton. Of course the downside is without some form of air suspension, the rear springs are going to need to be so stiff it's going to basically ride like a 3/4 ton offroad negating one of the benefits of owning a 1/2 ton.

It will be nice for avoiding the "sticker police" for those who push the tow rating (it can be difficult to tow close to the max rating with a 1/2 ton without exceeding the GVWR).

Though in real world performance, while stiffer springs will help, as mentioned above a lighter vehicle will tend to get pushed around by the trailer more. And the Ecoboost has really lousy engine/grade braking compared with the GM 6.2.

The thing I noticed driving the ego boost I had for work truck for a week or so is it feels extremely laggy, if youre not in boost it's super weak. Transmission shifts life crazy, seems confused. Sure it makes good power and tows good with your foot to th floor...but if you set cruise at 60-65 it feels laggy and tranny searches around it was annoying to drive IMO

Give it a year or two, competition will reach a whole new level I think.

Dodge has just come out with a diesel half ton. Dodge is gaining market share at a fast rate. GM and Ford will have no choice but to produce mini Duramax engines and mini Powerstroke engines for their half ton trucks. If GM and Ford decide to leave that sector alone and not take on Dodge in the half ton diesel category, they can kiss their butts goodbye. I think almost everyone and anyone who could get a diesel half ton over a gas half ton, would.

People are in debt up to their ears, wages are low, cost of living is high across the board. People are not buying new vehicles at the same rate they were, and my guess is that will continue. I know for myself, unless a miracle happens for me where I find a job that pays twice as much as I am making now, I will never buy another brand new vehicle. Almost everyone I talk to says the same.

What this leads to is a market desperate to innovate at break-neck speed, then try and sell the fancy new vehicles that fewer and fewer people have the cash to buy or finance.

On the contrary, 2014 has been a spectacular year for new vehicle sales; it is the first year the automotive industry has officially recovered from the economy downturn-inspired slump in sales.

Do you really think it will last though?

I'm not convinced. Costs are just too high and wages too low. I think people are getting too comfortable too soon, and putting themselves right back into the large debt that they had 6 years ago when this all started. The only way all of this new crap is sustainable is through disposable manufacturing. Everything now is designed to last a specific amount of time, which is nowhere near the length of time older stuff would last. If products need to be replaced every X number of years, the companies making this stuff know they are guaranteeing themselves future sales.

Longer term and sub-prime auto loans have bloated sales numbers and increased time frames that consumers will return to the dealership to buy or lease another car. Essentially, the auto industry is taking the equivalent of a cash advance on their credit card, only in this case, the cash is their new vehicle sales.
