Lemon buy back by GM. In March, we traded our 2005 Chevy truck with over two hundred eighteen thousand miles on it for a new 2015 Chevy 2500HD Duramax diesel suitable for towing our 27 5L Arctic Fox 5th Wheel trailer. With only 2387 miles on it, the new truck's diesel exhaust system started failing. After multiple failures and unsuccessful attempts to resolve to problems, GM agreed to repurchase the truck and provide us with a nearly identical replacement vehicle. They also agreed to pay for the title/tax, and movement of add-ons to the truck, such as the 5th wheel hitch and running boards. Except for the fact that it took 43 days from the most recent failure, August 29th for the repurchase process to be completed, we feel good about how the problem/resolution was handled. The folks at the dealer (Al Serra Chevy) where we purchased the truck were very responsive and helpful throughout the process. While our first truck was in the shop, multiple times, they provided us with a loaner vehicle, and did everything they could to push the repurchase process forward quickly. Now, we're looking forward to the pleasure of owning and using our new vehicle.

Please let me know how you went about getting them to buy back. This is the third trip for the def system. Last time it was in the shop they found the intake wasnt connected properly at the filter so it has been sucking dirt the whole time. It has 8500 miles and talked to customer care who told me to talk to the sales manager does this sound correct? Why do i need to talk to the sales manager to have gm purchase the vehicle back? Please give step by step of how it all went down. I feel this engine is dusted and unreliable. But so far gm doesnt seem to concerned said maybe an extended warranty could be given but this isnt good enough. I have time and money wrapped up in taking the truck in all the time.

My truck has been perfect- thankfully. I did just receive a letter from GM regarding a wiring harness that needs to be inspected regarding and EGR tab.

This is good to hear. I still have some concern that the problem is model related, not just a single vehicle.

From our experience the players that you need support from are the server manager for the dealership, the sales manager for the dealership, and key, the GM Regional Manager. It also helps a lot to have the owner/General Manager of the dealership on your side. In our case we had support from all of these players. After reaching an agreement with the dealership/service manager, that a buy-back was an option worth pursuing, the actual buy-back process (paperwork) started with the sales manager (sales associate) finding us a suitable replacement vehicle. The service manager then parpared the paperwork and sent it to the GM Regional manager for approval. It was then sent to GM for additional processing/approval. GM then sent us an offer based upon the value of our original vehicle and the replacement vehicle. Ours was almost an even trade, but the process still took 43+ days, with us pushing it along without being overly aggressive. We didn't want to upset any of the players, or to lose their support.

How maNy times did you have to take it in before you started the lemon process?

We had eight or nine failures related to the exhaust system. In one case it was in for 10 days, in another it was in for over 15 days, with a GM tech being called in to assist with the troubleshooting/repair.

I'm dealing with a vibration issue that I feel I'd going to end up with a lemon buy back. With only 10k miles and a lot of add ons I hope they get this figured out. Is there any legal requirements that must be met for this process?

Thanks!

As far as I know, there are no legal requirements for the GM buy-back process. It's a GM customer satisfaction policy/process. In Colorado, where we live, there is also a legal, lemon-law that can be used, but it requires a lot more effort, and is much more complex then the courtesy buy-back process that we used. From what I understand, each state has its own lemon-law so I would suggest you do a web search for your state lemon-law to see what it is and how it might work in your case.

Thanks, I'm gonna have to start doing sine research on the matter just to be informed. Fingers crossed it doesn't come to that! I really love my Sierra...
