AutoGuide HD truck comparison

Recommended Posts

Was going to put this in the industry news section, but more people that are interested in the HD's would be more likely to see it here.

Automakers love to play the numbers game, especially when it comes to big trucks. A recent spat between Ram and Ford saw both companies claiming the “best-in-class” towing title for their respective heavy duty pickups like kids in a sandbox arguing over who has the better castle.

This seems to be the way most hd comparisons end. The numbers sheet says that the GM is gonna get killed by the ford and ram, but when drag racing or real world testing comes in the GM usually wins.

Correct.

Duramax + Allison = winning combination

What's also impressive is the the LML has been the same since 2011 and still can beat out the other big 2.... And ford just put a more powerful tune on this years 6.7

And the Allison truely is an amazing transmission... It's always in the right gear no matter what

The towing tests have a lot to do with weight, the Duramax is 1000lbs lighter than the ford just about...wait till 2015 models for ford, they are putting a massive turbo in them. Huge potential, it's gonna be another rocket like the 6.4 but only faster cuz of the piezo injectors can flow a lot of fuel...

2015-2016 is gonna be interesting year for HD trucks...

By the way, I think the new torq shift is a damn smooth tranny too. Ford really did their homework with this one, my dads truck has been pretty solid. Has 100k on it, gets wicked mileage and pulls pretty damn good. I just don't like that junk turbo on them, falls flat on it's face at 60mph or so. Spools ultra quick cuz it's so small but lacks the good up top pull you need on the highway.

The 2015? If that's what ur talkin about they got rid of the junk single sequential replaced it with a gt37 Garrett and added bigger injector tips. Few other fuel things changed too, when they crack the ECM on that bad boy I bet it will make over 600rwhp on spicy tuna's

Well personally I have very little experience with diesels. I know how they work and how turbos work but I've never wrenched on a diesel. I wonder just because they are pulling an enormous amount of power out of these motors. That places a high demand on what the turbo and engine must do to achieve that power. Stressing major componants can lead to big failure. So if a manufacturer, ford, gm or ram, tries to pull almost 900 foot pounds out of a 6.6 or 6.7 etc, and sourses sub par parts and components, they could fail catastrophically. So I suppose my pondering has more to do with build quality than just big power

Well they are built quite well to be honest,

For it to runaway it has to be a perfect storm situation. Possibility? Yes but anything is possible. Is it likely? Doubt it. So you obviously understand how a diesel will run away right?

My motor took (stock rotating assembly) 65 pounds of boost and stock injectors maxed out for 200k, made around 650hp to the rear wheel. Never had one issue with the rest of the trucks drivetrain, besides built tranny. What I'm trying to get at, is they are built pretty damn tough man...every time they up the hp and torque they make parts better. I know of at least a dozen newish LML Duramax running 800hp on stock bottom end...

Anything is a possibility! Runaways are perfect storm situations for sure. It will be very interesting to see where HD trucks go in the next few years. I only questioned the runaway possibility because I watched a video of a 2015 duramax bone stock run away. Granted it's a 1 in a 1,000,000 truck but still, it just got me wondering.

Turbo seal or bearing?

Turbo seal or bearing?

Couldn't tell you honestly, it was just a video of the truck billowing smoke and then it seizing up and blowing what I assume to be a part of the cooling system. I would think seal just because it seems more likely but I can't say for sure.
