2015 Sierra HD 6.0 Two Weeks in Some Thoughts

Purchased the truck 2 weeks ago. I have a little less than 1,000 miles. Here are some initial thoughts.

 

1) having stepped up from a 2011 Silverado 1500 LT extended cab, the cabin is a huge improvement. The fit and finish is real nice. I like the LED interior lights and the red lighting for the instruments. Having very low lights on the door handles is a nice touch.

2) Like the Inteliilink, but to me it could be more intuitive/user friendly.

3)While the ride on the 2500 is more harsh, which I expected, the cabin is much quieter. Big plus

4) The gas mileage is horrible. Again, I was expecting a step down from the 5.3 in the 1500, but what I have been getting on highway and local is bad. I wonder If I will notice much as I put on more miles.

5) Love the sliding rear window. Never had one before. Thought it was a gimmick, but with it and a front window open, the air circulation is great.

6) Additional lighting in the bed, is helpful.

7) I like the camper mirrors with the spotters. However, this is my first time with them. It takes a while to get use to them since they create their own set of blind spots.

8) I know the 6.0 is tried and true, but I wish it was a bit quicker. Sometimes, it feels under powered for the vehicle.

9) Slow release tail gate and corner steps are nice adds.

10) Headlights are not as bright as the 2011 1500.

11) Though i have not had it long, I like the spray in liner over the drop in. With the drop in it was constantly coming loose and dirt would get underneath it. Also like that the anchor points are not behind plastic plugs like they are on the drop in. Movable anchors also a plus. The cargo rail liners with the GMC letters are cool. My concern is the factory spray in is not as thick as the one you would get if you bought one aftermarket. Plus the OEM is probably only warrantied for 3 years. I think the aftermarket are good for life.

 

If I can think of anything else, I will add. Overall very happy with the truck and much improved over the previous generation

I have a 2015 regular cab HD. Gas mileage (I had two 6.0 prior, an 04 and 06) was 12-14mpg average on those. With the new one, I took a 180 mile trip from Rochester to Syracuse, running between stop and go, with alot of 55-70 highway. I averaged 15.4mpg on that trip which I was impressed with. My 2012 1500 would have been 17ish. Right now, its around 13-14mpg driving from home to work (30mi round trip). I'm at 1900 miles and the mpg's have improved slightly so far since purchasing, so I think they will get a bit better, not much though. I'll see how it does going to Buffalo next week.

Factory Spray in bed liner is out sourced to a company like "Line-X" or someone similar. It's still "aftermarket", just done before it shows up at the dealership. I only learned this since my new truck is in "waiting" mode while its outsourced for the Factory Spray in.

I picked mine up last week too. Has 750 kms on it now. I traded my '13 HD for it so gas mileage is not a shocker to me (although, come to think of it, I seem to have gone through more than normal on my trip to the city yesterday).

 

I am quite happy with it. I was dreading the intellilink but am getting used to it ---it's not so bad, definitely could be better.

 

I find the ride VERY stiff compared to my '13---is it just me? I like it, though.

 

I find the new seats are not nearly as nice as the old ones---I get a sore back every time, ack. I DO love the heated seats, though! Never had that before . .

 

I hate fake wood, but it's growing on me and I like some of the other interior changes too---again, I didn't like them at first.

 

Love the LED cargo lighting---unloaded the truck in the dark last night. Very helpful.

 

I don't like the delay in fan speed---if I turn the fan down, I want quiet right away, not a few pauses before it quiets down.

 

My WiFI hotspot doesn't appear to be working (not sure why yet) but that's not a huge deal as it's just a novelty to me. I can use a real computer if I have to, don't live by my email, haha.

I wasn't impressed with the power or mpgs of my '13 2500 6.0 either. I wasn't expecting to be layed back into my seat when in normal driving conditions or towing my camper, but taking it over mountain passes loaded or not was disappointing. I liked the truck, but in the end it didn't do what I wanted it to do well enough and traded it for a '15 2500 Duramax.

I bought a 2015 2500HD Z71 CC 4X4 6.0 a few weeks ago. It is a fairly plain LT. I now have 2000 miles on it. I have had four very similar 2500HD's since 2009. The 2015 is much quieter than any of my other 2500's. The shocks on the Z71 package seem to ride smoother than the non-Z71's I had before. The initial mpg are a little better than my old trucks. I am running about 15 on the highway at 65 unloaded. I am running about 9.5 pulling a 6300# travel trailer with a loaded truck. My experience has been that the 6.0 will start getting better mpg after about 25,000 miles. I could get much better mpg in my old trucks when I would run non-ethanol gas.

 

I bought a truck with manual seats this time. My last truck had electric seats. Hind sight is that I should have paid the money for the electric seats on the 2015. I like electric seats more than I realized.

 

All four of my 2500's have had somewhat different programing in torque management and grade braking. Over the years the torque management appears to become more limiting and the grade braking seems to be less aggressive.

 

My understanding is that the 2015 2500 is the same frame, engine and drive train that has been in place since 2011. My 2012 2500 was a big improvement over my 2009 & 2010 trucks.

 

The inside of the cab of the 2015 is such a big change that I am still trying to become accustomed to all of the changes. It is a source of irritation that I will need to replace the door wiring harnesses to make the turn signals work on my recently installed GM towing mirrors. My old trucks did not need the wiring harness revision for the tow mirror addition.

 

The 2500 is a very good truck. If you are like me you will soon wonder how you lived without a 2500.

The Z71 doesn't have the fake wood. (I refuse to have real/fake wood in any vehicle I drive). I believe there is a optional trim set that replaces it. Worst case, get the Z71 replacement parts if it bothers you enough.
