Sunroof question.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys was thinking about adding a sunroof on my 14' sierra slt crewcab. I've never owned a vehicle with one but think it would be nice to have. I had a power rear windshield window on my last truck and hated washing it and the motor went out twice in a few years and I rarely used it. So I think a sunroof would be a nice change. I would be going with a Webasco unit. Any cons? Anyone have one installed and can comment on interior noise?

I have a factory sunroof in my '14, but I did have a sunroof installed in my '13 SLE. I used http://www.classicsofttrim.com/, whom the dealer recommended. It was a flawless experience. New headliner, a few more features than the OEM sunroof, and a lifetime warranty. They are located all over.

I understand that some companies specialize in this but this would make me so nervous. A random company cutting a big hole in the roof of my truck? I'll pass but that's just me.

On a side note, I have heard horror stories of people who've had problems with factory sunroofs in many different makes of cars. Motors quit and they are stuck open, seals wear or and they leak, tracks break and they leak, etc. I can't tell where you live because I'm on mobile but in Canada with the cold winters and moisture, I don't want leaks or openings to the environment. Just my 2 cents though

Well the shop that would be doing the install does several every month for mainly dealers adding customer options. So I know they would be doing a good job. When I visited the shop, they had brand new dealer vehicles there having sunroofs put in. One I watched them install part of was a new 15' Yukon slt and 14' Tahoe slt. They make everything look factory. Even the buttons look nice with SLT chrome key style trim.

As far as warranty, it's lifetime.

2014 Sierra SLT- I have a stock sunroof installed at the factory when I ordered my truck. No problems, very quiet when closed. When open a windscreen pops up to deflect air.It minimizes air flow and wind noise when open.

The rear sliding window does help a little if you drive with the windows down a lot, which I rarely do. I'd much rather the AC on/windows up and block out the exterior sound of SoCal traffic. But it is a pain to wash because it doesn't sit flush with the rear windshield and for whatever reason, small debris seems to make it's way into the internals. My regulator failed twice and it was expensive to fix each time.

Personally, order a truck with a sunroof. Afertmarket is a big gamble when it comes to a giant hole in your roof. I had a sunroof in my last car and wanted one in my truck but I found one with all the options but that and a rear sliding window. I really don't miss the sunroof, I feel there is little benefit but some people have to have them and love em. So you each their own.

I had the dealer add the Webasto sunroof when I bought my truck. No problems, and looks factory. I was very nervous as I had heard horror stories as well, but I'm glad I did it and would do it again.
